~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It never occurred to me how much I didn’t know about Ville. He was so complex - like a rubix cube, only more attractive. And I certainly never pictured kissing a rubix cube. The way he would sit on that couch, hunched over for hours just writing, it was fascinating. He really got into that sort of thing. I sat on the chair near the window, watching each graceful movement of those fingers against that paper. Eraser shavings covered the surface of the wood and each time he’d go to brush them off they’d just swirl around the air and land right back again in the same spot. Quite entertaining to watch.
He’d huff up breath near his forehead to get those curly hairs out of the way, or reach to scratch the arm that has the tattoo-sleeve. All of those movements I studied and memorized, so pretty soon I had everything down pat. Each time he would do something, I’d say the next thing in order in my head, smiling. Of course he didn’t notice, too wrapped up to do anything but finish.
I leaned back in the chair, laying flat across it to stretch my back, hearing everything pop. That always felt just about right. It was snowing again, not as hard as the day we came here but bad enough that some was collecting on the outside window pane. Standing up I made my way past the couch and toward the kitchen.
“Want any hot chocolate?” I yelled to Ville, turning just before reaching the stove. He shook his head from where he sat, knowing I was looking.
“No thank you darling. Maybe later.”
That’s what you said about the sandwich earlier, too…
The water I set on the stove began to steam in the kettle, barely making a sound. Time felt so different here, as if inside this house we were in slow motion while the rest of the world was moved to fast forward. It was nice. But soon, it all had to end. I had to go back to the hotel, which I was already late in doing, and face the wrath of Ape. She’d be so pissed and probably not talk to me for months, since I probably ‘ruined this trip’ - but in a way, I didn’t mind that. Maybe for once Castle Bam would be silent.
I stood there, staring out at the snow covered yard, unaware of the over-boiling tea-kettle until some of the water splashed out and bounced off the stovetop, hitting my arm. Jumping back I looked around and grabbed a towel, yanking it off the hot burner and turning down the heat. That scared the shit out of me.
When I walked back into the room holding my steaming cup of hot chocolate, Ville glanced up from piling all the papers on top of one another and setting them to the side of the table.
“Everything alright?” he asked, smiling the slightest bit. I made a mental note of how drained he looked, as if writing that long had sucked a huge amount of energy out of him. That reminded me of a question I never got the chance to ask.
“Hey, how old are you?”
Ville sat back, “I will take that as a yes. Well sweetheart, how old do I look?” His eyes held a gleam of playfulness so, when I sat down, I put my chin on my hands and stared at him. He wasn’t the least bit uncomfortable.
“I’d go with…late twenties?” That laugh rang through the room as he shook his head.
“I wish I was still that youthful.”
My head tilted to the side, “So…I was wrong?” Really hope he doesn’t say fifty.
“Despite my obvious charm and appeal, I’m 34.” Right around my age. Perfect.
It was my turn to laugh at how flattered he seemed. “Oh, and to answer your question, the kettle just boiled over, that’s all.” I took a slow sip of hot chocolate before gulping it all down when I realized it had cooled down.
We spent the rest of the day, until the sun was going down past the buildings, talking about nothing specific. I could always be this way with him. Never knew how much I’d miss this one day.
The phone ringing was the only thing that broke us out of our chat, it was his house phone. He got up instantly and walked over, grabbing the offending silver cordless part and holding it up to his ear.
“Hei?”
Silence.
“Toki, ei ongelma. Olisin iloinen nähdessäni teidät.”
More silence until he laughed, I could tell he was smiling even though he was facing the wall.
“Okei, nähdään sitten.”
Ville hung up and turned on his heel, smile still pulling at those lips. What was he so happy about?
”Who was it?” I asked, standing up when he walked over and held my hand.
”A friend. He and a couple others are going to stop by.”
He? Others? My body tensed a little, heart pounding harder. This was jealousy. Instead of letting him go I gripped his hand a little tighter.
”How long are they gonna be here?” It seemed ignorant to ask but just came out.
”Not very long. I’m just going to show them what I wrote, talk about a few things, the usual. No worries, Bammie. They won’t stay all night.”
As soon as the nickname rolled off his tongue I was relaxed, smiling and looking into his eyes. When we ever got so close with one another I didn’t know, maybe it was the kiss, or maybe it was just fate. He jogged into the kitchen, the clanging of dishes signaling he was straightening up.
No more sunlight was visible as I stared out the living room window, leaning against the frame. I tried to imagine what these ’friends’ looked like, and how close they were with Ville. The excitement on his face showed that he hadn’t seen them in awhile, and I was happy that he was like that, but couldn’t help feel protective in a way.
A few minutes the doorbell rang. I moved from my position at the window and walked into the hall, watching him open the door from afar, crossing my arms over my chest and resting my shoulder against the wall. When the door opened I couldn’t focus on the figures very easily, due to the darkness, but Ville ushered them in. The first guy I saw was a man with very long dreads, almost down to his stomach. He had a smile on his face, hanging up his scarf on the coatrack. The second guy was one with semi-long brown hair, hanging down past his shoulders. He moved next to the other one to let the last guy in, a scruffy looking guy with a heavy beard and kind of wild hair, who was wearing boots and a red coat. Kind of intimidating. He was the first one to look over at me and lock eyes.
His gaze seemed a bit challenging, as if he expected me to walk back into the living room and sit like a good little boy. In a way that pissed me off - I’d never met him before. But the other two followed his eyes and smiled at me, waving. I waved back, looking from the rugged guy over to Ville as he shut the door and gave them all a hug.
They all moved in a group towards me, Ville pulling me closer to shake everyones hands.
”Bam, these are my friends, Linde...”
Dreads.
”...Burton...”
Silent but friendly.
”...And Mige.”
Lumberjack. Who had suddenly put his arm around Ville’s waist a little too friendly at the mention of his name. I felt every muscle in my body tense, hands balling into fists before I forced them into my pockets.
We all followed Ville into the living room, me trailing behind the rest of the group. They huddled around the coffee table where he’d been sitting almost all day, leafing through the stack of the papers. Burton took a couple sheets, holding them up to get a clearer view and seemed to study them.
I moved slowly back to my chair, putting my legs up on it and taking my hands out of my pants pockets only to shove them into the one in my hoodie. Closing my eyes I shifted to put my head on the arm of the chair, yawning. The time difference was still kicking my ass, no matter how I tried to stay up. My eyelids were heavy as I opened them when I felt someone walk over to me. Ville had the blanket from over the couch in his hands, draping it over me as I smiled at him. His friends were still around the table, talking jibberish to one another. When he stared leaning down I sat up more, meeting his lips halfway. This kiss was very tender, very enjoyable, even if it was just small and nothing like what I really wanted. As he pulled back one of his hands came up to rub my cheek.
”Sleep well, Kulta” he whispered, then kissed my forehead before backing up and toward the group again. I sighed, wiggling to get comfortable again and began to drift off. The last thing I saw was Mige and Linde look over their shoulders at me.
