FAQ - Living in Death City

Where are we going to live?

As it is by no fault of yours that you have arrived in Death City, Shinigami-sama will be providing you with housing. Upon arrival, you will be assigned a group living space - an apartment complex that has been refurbished into a make-shift dormitory.

Those who have just arrived will be given a studio apartment in Casualty Communal. Each apartment consists of one room with a bathroom, small sized kitchen, a desk with a computer, and a fold-out couch. There are common areas on the first floor, with various couches, tables and a television, where you may meet your fellow Weapons and Meisters. Casualty Communal is specifically for those who have yet to find a partner.

Once you have formed a team with a Meister/Weapon, you will be moved to Death City Heights. You and your partner will be given a two bedroom apartment, which includes a kitchen, shared bathroom, and a small living room. These homes will also include desks and computers, to keep Meisters and Weapons connected to the Shibusen network.

The rooms in both complexes are fully furnished, though you may wish to purchase your own belongings to add a personal touch. If you are uncomfortable with the provided homes, there is also the option to buy your own home elsewhere in the city, if you would like to save up the money to do so.

And yes, all the units are equipped with an airconditioner.

How does currency work in Death City?

As your being here is the fault of Shinigami-sama and BREW, your living expenses will be paid for by the City. This means that housing, basic food and needs such as clothing will be covered - basically, anything that is required to live comfortably. Any extra luxuries, such as new clothing, electronics, or a new home require your character to have a source of income.

The currency used in Death City is known as ‘Death Dollars,’ which are calculated the same as the US Dollar. Any money taken from your original world will be considered invalid.

Obviously, we are not going to be calculating every dollar you spend - money will work based on the honour system. If you are unemployed, it is assumed that you have no spending money. If you have a part-time job, you aren’t going to be buying a new condo right away. Be reasonable, but have fun with it.

To pay for these things, you will need the communicator that was given to you when you first arrived. Just show it to the shopkeeper, and they'll accept it as payment!

How can I earn money?

There will be a board posted listing the various jobs available. Specific instructions for applying to the job will be listed on the job advertisement.

You can also earn money from certain missions.

Is Death City technology the same as modern technology?

Yes and no. Death City has the same level of technology one would find in a modern setting. They have computers, televisions, cellphones and video games - basically, the level of technology you would have in your own home.

The brands of electronics, however, would be different. Your PSP would not be compatible with the gaming software they use, and your cellphone would not connect to the Death City networks. So while you may have the technology from your old world, it doesn't mean it will be much use to you, unfortunately.

Where is there to go in Death City?

The various locations and destinations you may visit in Death City are listed on the Locations page. It has the same facilities one would expect from a city, such as restaurants, stores, etc.

What is outside of Death City?

Death City is in the middle of the desert in Nevada. Of course, this is by no means the only part of the world you can explore. The world is very much the same as modern day Earth, if not slightly twisted - the countries and cities (with the exception of the Witch’s Capital and Death City, of course) are very much the same.

Do I get to keep my weapon/magical item/precious object etc?

BREW has confiscated absolutely all Weapons, no exceptions. Other than that your character will arrive with everything they had on them at the moment they were taken from. If they have certain items with magical properties (for example Materia from Final Fantasy 7 or Innocence from D.Gray-Man) they will be completely sealed.

BREW does this because the only thing that can harm a Witch, Kishin, or Kishin egg is the resonance that occurs during a partnership. No matter how powerful a person or their weapons/abilities may be where they come from, they would be useless in this world.

If your item falls somewhere in between an item and a normal object (for example, a skateboard, air trecks) and you're not sure whether you can bring them or not, feel free to ask a mod and we'll let you know!

Can my character acquire a normal weapon in Death City somehow?

Practice weapons (really crappy weapon-shaped objects that are usually dull, poorly balanced, not really good for anything except thwacking practice targets) are always available in Death City. Real weapons, i.e. weapons that are not people can be found outside of Death City, but the character will have to travel to those locations in order to buy one - there's no easy mail-order catalog available ;) In order to leave the city to travel to those distant lands, a character needs to take on a mission where they can acquire a weapon as a reward - and to take a mission, a character needs a partner. There may or may not be different opportunities to acquire these weapons in the future.

Does Death City have a library?

Shibusen itself has a massive library with a large variety of books. It's open to the students, residents, and guests of Death City. Guests are allowed to take them home as long as they are returned!

Is there some sort of mafia in Death City? Or any organization similar to that?

Shibusen is the only organization in Death City at present, apart from the usual local government. Because Death City is the location of the main Shibusen base, it has a low crime rate and things like gangs and the like are unlikely to thrive in the environment.

If my character has the knowledge, can they make homemade explosives?

If they're the small-scale explosives that you can make from grocery store ingredients, go for it! Anything larger, please contact a mod about it!

Are characters forced to move in together once they resonate and become partners?

Nope. Although Shibusen recommends it, you do not have to move in if you do not want to.

Can our characters get a car?

Driving is allowed in Death City, but there are some IC difficulties to it. Your character will need to get a license first, which is not freely given to guests, and the streets of Death City tend to be narrow and are mostly made of cobblestone. It's not very practical. However! You can buy a moped or a motorcyle for now as long as your character can afford it!

What are the prisons in Death City like?

There are two prisons in Death City! The first is in the Kuzunoha Detective Agency, which has the normal jail cell you'll see in any police station. It's generally small and the security is standard, which means it's reserved only for fairly normal humans. Meisters and weapons who end up in here often have their abilities sealed for the duration of their hopefully-short stay.

The second is in Shibusen itself. Shibusen HQ has a labyrinth of dungeons deep in its basement, with a variety of jail cells. There are decently-sized ones for their human captives, which may contain a small bed and a tiny window, while tiny nooks with an incredibly high level of security are dedicated to contain highly dangerous witches. All the doors are made of thick metal with narrow window shutters at eye-level for peeking, and a small slot at the bottom for their food tray. The walls are made from layers and layers of large stone and are virtually unbudgeable.
