Gai was on his best behavior, or as best as he could be. His visit to the clinic had been quiet. There was no reason to cause a problem, and Gai still had a lot to think about. The trip home was talking about things Obito would have seen on the tour had he made it, the structures, the shops, what happened around the city.

At the door Gai tried to cover up his concerns. How would Kakashi deal with this? Was he ready? Would there have been a better way to do this? Could he have prepared Kakashi better? Gai made noise opening the door and kicking off his shoes, a bit of a warning. Sure, Kakashi had known where Gai was going and why, but this way there was noise to signal what was coming.

"This way, Obito." Gai lead the way to the living room. Now it was time to see what happened next.

Obito followed Gai's example and kicked off his shoes to leave next to the door. Padding after the other ninja into the living room, Obito looked around, his eyes widening.

"Some place you guys got here..." It was pretty spacious for an apartment. So only two people lived here? He was pretty sure his immediate family hadn't had this much space allotted to them in the Uchiha compound. How fair was that?

There wasn't much in the way of material possessions, so space was the most prominent thing about their condo. Obito wandered over to the television, then turned to look out the windows that made up one entire wall. The sound of skittering caught his attention and Obito turned in time to see a little puppy rushing its way over to investigate their new visitor.

Grinning, Obito bent to pet the dogs head and was met with cheerful yips and a wildly wagging tail. "I didn't realize you guys had a dog."

It wasn't easy, and wouldn't be for some time, and that unnerved Kakashi. He was just now adapting to the change in relationship with Gai, the new openness, and now here was Obito. Obito, who for over 20 year had been nothing more than a name on the memorial stone and who, in that form, had heard countless concerns, hopes, dreams, and insecurities from the otherwise reserved and almost stoic Kakashi ( ... )

"It is very large. Strangely large. If my students had not moved in here I would not have asked Kakashi to move here with me. Partners, Meisters and Weapons, work better together if they live together." That at least was a safe explanation until later. As Kakashi had been uncomfortable with his students knowing, he would likely be even worse with his much-younger former teammate.

Gai looked up from Kyoumei as Kakashi followed the puppy, meeting Kakashi's gaze. Kakashi didn't look entirely ready for this, and Gai wasn't surprised. He would cover as much as he could for the both of them. "He did! It was like he knew that there was someone who wanted a dog in the apartment. Also as if he knew there were shoes he could gnaw on until people started putting them up higher off the ground!" There, a light topic. "Should we go to the living room and sit down? There is a large couch and I can bring water, or make tea..."

"I'd like to meet them someday," Obito said, not looking up from the puppy. Gai had mentioned Kakashi had students too, hadn't he? He would like to meet them all. Hopefully Kakashi hadn't killed them with his spartan tactics and strict adherence to the shinobi code.

Then, he heard his voice and Obito froze. He swallowed and slowly looked up. Whatever Gai had been saying to go along with Kakashi's claim that the dog had just followed him home went in one ear and out the other. Obito wasn't prepared for this meeting. He wasn't prepared for this at all.

Finally, his eyes met the masked face of his old teammate. The eye he had given to Kakashi was now covered by the headband and Obito's gaze rested there a moment longer. Then he looked Kakashi over again. There could be no mistake. It was the same man. Except.... "I can't believe how old you are!"

That was probably not the kindest way he could have put it, but Obito was known for speaking his mind, not for his tact.
