He had asked her to go on a walk with him again. She had turned, and still with that sense of defeat in her eyes, offered him a weary smile. "Sure, Kenshin. I'd like that. Good night." Before she turned and walked off. She didn't give a fleeting glance, a smile. Her shoulders were straight.

She didn't talk to him for a good three days afterwards. Kaoru wanted time to heal, because she heard the note in his voice. That there was something to be said and she wasn't sure she would like it. Accept it? Absolutely. Whatever Kenshin needed to say she would listen. But--if it was about him finally stopping being gentle with her and telling her to stop stop that hand-holding--stop that fond, tender glance she sometimes gave him---then that was something that took time to prepare for.
So she did.
Catching him in the hallway, she simply offered him a sheepish smile, blue eyes lifting up hesitantly. "You..want to still go on a walk? I know it's late but um...I guess I got a little busy. " It was a lie and she knew it, but she wanted ---she wanted it to be easy for him.
