OUTSIDE SHIBUSEN [Open to New guests + NPCs + Volunteers] thisismyera August 14 2011, 04:50:00 UTC
Having finally lead beyond the bizarre confines of Shibusen Academy’s grounds, the next part of the tour rewards the patience - or lack thereof, but it truly makes no difference - of those obediently following with their first sight of the new world that they’ll be living in. Meeting the eyes is the only very mildly impressive view of a broad, open terrace, just beyond the main entrance. Surrounding the premises to the curious beholder, though, stretches the significantly more impressive expanse of Death City, and beyond even that, all the way to the horizon, rolls the seemingly-endless desert of Nevada, United States. Despite being a desert, it seems that the weather has taken a turn for the cold here, because the air can actually be described as chilly. It’s bright in Nevada, however, and a quick look up will show you a freakish-looking sun grinning either welcomingly or malevolently, but nonetheless in greeting at the newcomers below ( ... )

[Ram stared at the sun until his eyes started to hurt and he had to look away. He never saw anything like that before. He didnt' even know what 'that' was. It was so bright, too bright. There was nothing like it in the grid.

He looked back to the users and waited until the smaller one stopped talking.]Are there virus in the field and that's why people go crazy?

Yeah, don't mind the sun. Guests always think it's weird. [He doesn't miss a thing, Black★Star.] No idea why, though...

...Virus? [He looks perplexed.] No, it's not like... a disease or something. [He scratches at his head. Man, it's hard trying to explain to people who don't know anything.] It's kind of... this 'aura' that makes you go nuts.

You've never seen a sun before? Did you live underground or something? [It's bound to be fun when it begins to heat up again. It gets pretty hot here in the desert.]

Uhh. [He scratches at his head. Close enough! He doesn't know much about computers...] Then I guess it's kinda the same. Only way to block it out is to have a really strong wavelength of your own though.

It didn't exist in my world, but we have other fonts of energy. [Ram is not used to different weathers he won't understand why is he sweating. Or what even is sweat.]

And how do I get one of those?

Huh. [Yeah, he can't even begin to imagine how that might work.

Fortunately, though, the subject of having a strong soul wavelength is something something he knows plenty about.]

You have to train! [He raises a clenched fist and grins.] BREW gave you a wavelength, but you gotta work on your mind and body and learn how to use your new abilities. It's the only way.

The further they wander from Shibusen's campus, the more opportunities there are to wander away, and L is sorely tempted on several occasions. Despite this, something keeps him with the tour group. It's very likely that curiosity is a factor. It's even more likely that fear of the unknown is keeping him clinging to what he knows; even if this whole situation is as new to him as it is to every other bewildered member of the tour group, it's the most familiar thing here.

He holds the jacket that Neku had given him tightly around his shoulders as a stiff and chilly breeze brushes against him. He glances up, and his eyes widen when he sees that the Sun actually has a face.

He isn't sure how to react to this. He defaults with a shaky, odd laugh that sounds like he never properly learned how to laugh ( ... )

Ugh. There's always one who just has to get mouthy when he's trying to help them. Or a dozen. Actually, that's probably why Black★Star has helpers now... and Tsubaki to rein him in.

"You're safer in here than you are out there-" and he points vaguely off into the desert before continuing, "-and until you guys learn how this world works and then get stronger, there's no way any of you can survive on your own. Shibusen has ten-year-old students who'd have better chances."

Of course, he neglects to mention that said children are Weapons and Meisters with abilities beyond that of ordinary humans.

When it comes to getting mouthy, L can compete with the best of them. This is especially true in situations where he's uncertain and insecure, and arguably, every new arrival here is feeling some measure of that at present.

"Right, I get that the Fields of Insanity are a pretty big risk to those coming are going. But honestly, I'm not reassured, especially if it's true that there are 10 year old children who could beat us up in here."

"Hey, then all the more reason to get stronger," Black★Star reasoned, acting nonchalant. He wasn't exactly supportive of the idea of coddling the Guests, and better to set them on the right road right then.

"They can now, but you guys have it easy. It takes Shibusen students years to learn how to use their abilities, but I've seen a Guest use the most powerful Meister ability within days. BREW lets you cheat the whole system."

He'd be lying if he said he wasn't also extremely annoyed by that.

As someone who was rather used to special treatment, it didn't take L long to realize that he was not being coddled. But the fact that "getting stronger" was mentioned meant that it was an option, which was heartening.

As well as the news that, relatively speaking, he had it easy. He was being allowed to cheat.

"My complaints are certainly fewer, knowing about those advantages. I hope that you're telling the truth."

Zed blinked, staring up at the sun a bit.

And stared for a few moments before moving his eyes to focus on Black★Star again. How the heck could that sun have a face!?

Junpei was around to help as usual, though this time Shibusen had decided to put him elsewhere-ish. He didn't mind, of course - as long as he could help out somehow, it was good enough for him.

While the official Shibusen duo (with names he could never remember properly, Blight★Star and Tsubasa or something like that) were busy attending to the other guests, he noticed one of them not having said anything just yet and mainly staring at the spiky haired kid of the duo. Junpei took a moment to debate about it before he decided to ask if anything was wrong, and so walked up to him with a wave.

"Yo, is there a question you wanna ask?"

Zed blinked, looking over at the guy who came over to him. "Yeah. What's up with that sun?"

Oh, it was about the sun again. Junpei supposed that wasn't too surprising - almost all of the newcomers always asked about the sun. He knew he did too as well.

"That's just how the sun is here," he replied with a shrug. "It's harmless though, so you can just ignore it."
