Guess who Rikku told about Vergil and Yuna's new living arrangements. Go on, guess.

Now guess who's at the door wanting to see for himself if this was true. He had managed to keep himself from knocking too enthusiastically or kicking down the door with a crazy grin on his face. You wouldn't have thought that he was the one on the other side of the door...

...unless you were utterly convinced that life hated you. Unfortunately, Vergil had only begun to suspect this as he answered the door to the apartment, expecting yet another well-wisher.

...

"Did you want something?" he asked drolly, while inwardly hoping this would end painlessly for once. He didn't need to ask.

This was it. The line had been crossed. He now knew who had to pay.

Rikku had to die.

Yuna had been about to speak again when she heard Vergil cross the room toward the apartment door at the sound of the knock. Setting her book down on the table, the summoner tried not to disturb the kitten on her lap as she tried to peer around his form and catch a glimpse of who was standing in the doorway.

By the tone of his voice, she could probably guess.

"Who's here, Vergil?"

"Heard you guys moved." Dante invited himself into the apartment. He knew it wouldn't happen unless he did it himself. "So I'd thought I'd stop by to see the place."

He whistled as he examined the rooms, but stopped when he saw Yuna. "How'd that happen?" He threw a glance at his brother that said Vergil, you are a terrible boyfriend.

In the second following Dante barging through the front door, Vergil simply turned around, leaned against the door frame and briefly squeezed his eyes shut. He focused on calm, markedly nonviolent thoughts. But he remained by the door, as if to say 'this will not be a long visit'.

But he would humour Dante for now.

"Mmn," he said, disinterested. His eyes narrowed at the accusing look, though. Not my fault. Well. He knew it wasn't, even if privately he felt that it was. He was certainly less than thrilled about the idea, and he'd done everything he could to make up for it since.

Yuna's eyes fell upon Vergil as his brother pushed his way into the apartment, and she took a moment to judge his reaction. She couldn't be rude and kick Dante out, as Yuna found herself in the strange position of the man in the red coat also being her cousin's, well, love interest.

Still, she wasn't sure how she felt about him herself, either.

The summoner's eyes moved to meet Dante's when he addressed her. "Oh, this?" she asked, shaking her head. "It's nothing. I just ran into some trouble during the attack. It's fine."

"Like hell, it's nothing! You got hurt while he was off playing the hero!" And saving his life in the process, but no one had to know that.

Not that he was doing any better, Rikku had also gotten injured and he hadn't known until the next day. Dante felt guilty enough about that.

He walked up to her and leaned in, gazing suspiciously at her. "You've been getting plenty of rest, right? He's not making you do all the work still?" This was his version of fussing.

"I meant to find her afterward," Vergil snapped a little more vehemently than intended. Tch. He hadn't told Yuna that he had ended up in the Shopping District anyway that night, and that he'd failed to find her after dealing with the two fights he'd been thrown into. He wouldn't have blamed himself quite so much, otherwise.

He glanced away, inwardly cursing. He vainly hoped she wouldn't pick up on that. Her attempting to absolve him was more than he was willing to put up with.

After looking back around, he blinked in surprise to find Dante was then over by Yuna. Thoughts of irritation were dispelled, though. Dante, worrying? He, at least, could recognize the nuance in his twin brother. He experienced a mix of amusement and perhaps very, very distant gratitude.

Yuna's eyes went a little wide at Dante's words before they flicked back and forth between the two brothers. She wasn't sure what to make of any of that. Probably just the two of them bickering as usual, though she still wasn't sure why this was such a big deal. If she was really that hurt, she would still be at the clinic like so many of the other guests.

She shrank a bit into the couch as he leaned over, staring at her with suspicious eyes. She blinked a few times rapidly, before replying.

"I-I promise, Vergil hasn't let me leave the couch," she said, chuckling a little nervously. "I've already tried to do some things around here and he hasn't let me." Something they could agree on? "But really, it's my own fault I got hurt and no one else's. Don't blame him, okay?"

The short exchange woke the small creature sleeping on her lap, which began to squirm and yawn before stretching and looking up at their visitor. Yuna glanced down at the feline before she scratched it warmly behind one pointed ear.

Dante did place his greatest importance on his brother and if Yuna was important to him, than he would also try to show the same consideration. In his own strange way of course.

There was a lot he could have said in response to all of that and he did open his mouth to speak when his attention was drawn to the kitten. All his retorts died the moment he saw a domestic animal in Vergil's apartment. There were a few things that Dante saw as constant fact of life. Vergil never getting a pet was one of them and yet here he was seeing evidence to the contrary right before his eyes. It was small, fluffy and cute.

There were no words. Yes, Dante was actually speechless.

"Mmn," Vergil agreed. "I'm not about to let Yuna do housework after receiving a concussion." Actually it had served as a good opportunity for him to actually do something around the place, too. As much as he could look after himself, the girl was way too domesticated. Spoiling her for once made for an interesting change.

And then Dante was staring wordlessly. It took a second for him to work out why.

"...It's called a cat," he said coldly, pinning him with a would-be cold stare. Inwardly, he cringed a little. He could see where this was going from a mile away and, to be honest, he was embarrassed. Vergil, strong and silent, lover of fluffy animals. Ugh.

"It's just a little bump on the head," she protested, looking a little sullen. "I don't think it even counts as a concussion anymore." Yuna was trying not to pout, but she wasn't that bad, really. They really didn't need to worry so much.

Yuna had to resist the urge to laugh at the exchange between the two brothers over the small animal sitting in her lap with perked ears.

"Isn't he cute?" she said happily. "I only found out about him a little while ago."

Found out about him a little while ago. That meant Vergil had bought the cat and presented it to Yuna as a present. How--

Finally his brain catches up and he narrows his eyes at Yuna. "It used to be a concussion?"

He takes a step back and looks over at Vergil. He tried to maintain a serious expression for as long as possible (which wasn't very long) before he ended up cracking a grin. "Is that why you bought the cat? You wanted something for her to comfort herself with?" He wisely didn't add, until you grew the balls to do it yourself?

Inwardly, Dante was thinking that Vergil was oh so very whipped. It was an entertaining thought. Really, his brother buying cute, little animals and doing all the housework all for her. Dante was so proud of him and at the same time found it absolutely hilarious.

Vergil scowled at the sight of Dante's stupid grin.

"I bought it before Halloween," he snapped back quickly, before realizing that might just make him look even worse. So he clarified, "We talked about getting a pet after first moving in. It was just convenient timing." Even to his own ears his voice sounded more than just a little defensive.

And wasn't that kind of undermining the effort he'd gone to for Yuna? Oh, hell. She knew he'd done something nice for her, and seriously, he shouldn't give a crap about what Dante thought. Unfortunately, he did, and it irked him immensely.

"It was either that or leave her completely alone when I have to train or work," he added before very determinedly glancing away to the side again and avoiding eye contact with his brother.

"Ah, yes. A brick hit me in the side of the head," she explained, then realized how bad that sounded. "But it's fine now! Really! And it was my fault for not having my partner with me." Yuna should have summoned him, but she'd been too worried about keeping him safe, too. And everything had turned out fine, so it really wasn't anything to be concerned about now.

Yuna glanced back and forth between the two brothers as they argued, her frown deepening all the while. Or really, more Dante being Dante and Vergil getting annoyed about it.

Finally, the summoner closed her eyes for a moment and sighed. "Dante, he and I discussed this earlier, so it wasn't like it was a present," she said pointedly. "And Vergil, you don't need to worry about leaving me here on my own while you're working. I can take care of myself, and Rikku said she'd stop by while you're gone."

It didn't seem possible, but Dante's grin got even bigger. A present prepared in advance, the defensiveness and even the way he couldn't even maintain eye-contact. This was too good to be true (The part about letting a brick hit her was worrying, but it turned out very well in the end).

"If it wasn't a present then why'd he have to wait so long? Face it, that's a present." Then putting on his most sappy expression he added, "That's so sweet of him, don't you think?"
