It was still hard to believe that Germany was sick. Sure, countries could catch colds every now and then. But this was really sick! And Italy didn't know whether to feel pity or fear. So he felt a bit of both. Germany had been working so very hard lately. Obviously, he just needed to rest for several days and take it easy. Did he know how to take it easy?

Italy came running through the apartment when he heard Germany speak. He didn't want Germany to have to yell for him, or to use the PDA to get his attention. That had stirred everyone up. At the smallest noise, he would drop everything and go to his Weapon.

"Germany! I told you to sleep!"

"Muh?" he muttered at the sudden appearance of his closest ally, confused and dazed from being sick and mostly just upset that he even was in this sort of situation. Being sick was one thing. Being incapacitated to the point of helplessness was another. He rolled over from where he'd plopped face-first on the bed and pushed himself up.

"I was," he started out, voice hoarse. Germany cleared his throat and tried again. "I was going to get water."

"I'll get it!" Italy sang, not waiting for Germany to explain himself. He was trying really hard, even after that twitchy nurse had come over and taken care of Germany too. But, for now, Italy was glad to have Germany all to himself. He was out the door and back again before Germany could probably even register him.

Italien was gone before Germany could say something, and back before Germany could even process that he'd gone. Strange, when had Italien become so fast, or was he perhaps getting slow in the brain? Nevertheless, water was more important at the moment.

"Thank you," he said with his voice low, reaching for the glass and mostly succeeding in wrapping a hand around it. All right, so two hands were necessary. "The room is cold," Germany added unhappily.

Italy winced slightly at the fact that Germany could barely even hold a cup. It was strange, to see something so strong suddenly become so fragile. It reminded him of Grandpa.

And it wasn't cold. Lisa had turned up the thermostat, hadn't she? To, like, eighty degrees. Italy placed a hand on Germany's shoulder. He was so hot, and yet he was complaining about being cold.

"You really should sleep," he said quietly.

"I have been sleeping all day," he muttered in protest, muzzy and drowsy despite his best efforts but less prickly now that he'd had a drink. "I should have started work earlier." Not that he could. Even Germany had better sense than to ever try, mostly because it would be terrible to throw up the remains of what breakfast he had all over his papers.

The hand on his shoulder was nice, though.

What else could Germany do besides sleep? He couldn't work (which was something he loved to do). He couldn't train (another thing he loved to do). He could barely hold things or move around. Italy's hand moved, and he gently brushed his knuckles against Germany's cheek. Still very warm. And then he pulled away.

"What do you want to do, then?"

The touch was pleasant. He was having slight chills but was stubbornly ignoring them, mostly because it seemed like the manly thing to do.

"I don't know," the blond admitted grudgingly, shifting slowly to swing his legs over the bed to the floor, next to where Italy was standing. "But inactivity will drive me mad. What were you doing outside?"

"I wasn't outside," Italy replied nervously. Why were you getting up, Germany? "I was in the kitchen!"

"Yes, I meant that," he corrected himself. It had barely been a few hours that he was stuck to the bedroom and everything outside the door was already "outside". Being sick was driving him up the wall! How could normal humans stand it?

He made as if to get up, even holding on to Italy's wrist to aid him, but didn't quite get to his feet. Germany sat back down with a small, frustrated sigh.

And Italy just let him try, too afraid to tell Germany no. Maybe he was a tamer Germany, but he was still Germany. Once it looked like he'd given up, Italy sat down beside him.

Was it wrong to feel happy about this? Probably. At the very least, Italy felt so selfish. Since they had gotten here, all Germany did was work with other people. He created training assignments, diligently went to class, focused on Shibusen... And these were all good things, helpful things. But Italy had somehow begun to feel lost in all of that. And he knew that he shouldn't have, but he did.

So, now, to have Germany stuck in bed, alone with him, made Italy feel at ease. Naturally, he wanted Germany to get better. But for now, this was nice. He said nothing, just sat there, doing his best to be sympathetic.

The sympathy really just went over his head, Germany unfamiliar with (or blind to) most acts of the emotional sort from people. He sighed again and discontentedly raked his fingers through his hair, making it stand up in messy spikes. The action made him dizzier.

"Being human is unpleasant," he muttered, reaching for the empty cup on the bed next to him and handing it over to Italy. He had not been this helpless since after the war, when his enemies had to take care of him. "How much rest should I have to be well again?"

Did Germany want more water? Italy took the cup and stood up again, suddenly feeling mopey. "Depends on how sick you are," he said as he tilted his head to the side. "Germany's really sick, so he needs to sleep a lot!"

"A lot," he echoed, depressed, and despite his efforts succumbed to the temptation to reach for his meister (friend, that was what he wanted to think, but Germany's socially inept that way) by his arm and lean his forehead on Italy's stomach.

"My head hurts," he informed Italy quietly.

Oh! What to do? Italy panicked for a moment, wondering if Germany was dying. What a weird gesture! But when Germany continued to stay like that, Italy finally brought up his empty hand to pet the back of Germany's neck.

"Maybe you should lie down. Okay?" Because a position like that was not going to help the pain.

Germany didn't move, because moving required effort, and effort was painful. He shouldn't have gotten up, but being on his back made his head stuffier.

Well, that was a good reason as any. "It hurts more when I lay down." This was not so bad, and anyway, Italy was far warmer than any pillow.
