But while Spirit was there, he was going to make the most of his time! He was manning the grill at that moment, although he was only really making food for his own eating and some to bring later.

Jade had dragged Dave around Death City that day, so of course she was going to drag him to the barbecue as well. At the moment, she had wandered away from him to greet other friends. Spying Spirit, she skipped over to watch him handle the grill.

"Hello! What are you doing?"

Spirit beamed at Jade---

Wait.

"Jade!" he exclaimed, almost overflipping a flat piece of steak when he realized that Jade was back. "When did you get back! You're back! Oh my gosh, wait--" He put the meat aside for a moment, wiped his hands on a nearby rag, and swept her up into his arms to stare at her at eye level.

Jade laughed as she got swept up -- it was really unusual for anyone to be so happy that she was there! Being on the island meant that she didn't get a lot of hugs.

"It's nice to see you too! I got back really early this morning!"

"Did you! I must have missed that on the network. Busy as a bee, you know the drill." Spirit was practically cooing, twirling around once (and avoiding the grill) before setting him down.

"I'm glad to see you back. Your friends seemed pretty worried about you."

"You are always so busy! You should have some time to yourself!" Jade was still giggling, because it was pretty fun.

"I think they were! I got a million hugs from Dave, of all people! It was awesome! He never gives me hugs."

"I have sleep time to myself, what more can I ask?" he laughed, petting her head.

Wait, wait, Dave hugging people? "He was the angriest about it, you know! Maybe he likes you. Teehee..."

"That's a good thing, though! Sleep is really important!" Spirit reminds her of Grandpa, minus the thrill of the hunt and the obsession with strange things like suits of armor. That's a good thing, she thinks.

"What do you mean, likes me?" She's embarrassed, and flushes a light shade of red.

Spirit might not be happy to be associated with a grandpa, but he'd take what he could get!

He giggled a little, looking impish at the cute flushing. Oh, little girls... Spirit did so like them! Even if Maka was the bestest of them all! "Doesn't he...?"

If Jade had had a father at any point, he probably would have been compared to that! As it stands, she likes him.

"I-i don't know! Maybe he does? But he's my best friend, I couldn't really ask him about it..."

"I could if you liked him, too, maybe..." he said with a poke at her cheek. "Aah, youth! I remember when I was your age..." He had loved many, many girls back then. Although of course, he hadn't gotten very far with any of them, because he had been a kid and also because he had been partnered with Stein and that took up most of his time.

"I don't know!" She blushed. It wasn't something she had really thought about. First she had lived on an island alone, then she had been pulled into the Medium. She didn't know what she wanted to happen, and SBURB was still a chief concern in her mind. It was probably better to wait.

"Did you have a lot of girlfriends?"

"A few," he laughed, meaning a lot, and sometimes all at the same time. "But I had a short career! I got married to my wife when I was sixteen or so." That didn't mean he stopped chasing after women, though, but Jade didn't have to know that.

"We had our lovely little baby, and now Maka is just a little older than you are!"

"Oh, that's romantic!" She sighed. Jade didn't know what to think about her getting married at sixteen, but it seemed like a perfect thing for Spirit.

"I bet she's really happy to have such a great dad! I never had a dad, just my grandpa...and then he died, when I was really little." She doesn't usually tell people this, but figures it's okay for him to hear it.

"Isn't it?" he cooed, pleased that Jade had thought so. And then less than pleased that what Jade was saying was actually not true. Oh, if only!

He took up his tongs again to flip over a piece of steak before it burned and to keep the mildly disturbed look on his face from showing. Oh, but she didn't have a dad? "How about I be your dad while you're here," he offered with a smile.

She paused and watched the steaks for a little bit. She'd never had someone offer to be any sort of guardian figure before. Growing up with an overprotective dog to take care of her had left her a little bit wild and eccentric, but...

John's dad always seemed so nice. Jade finally nodded enthusiastically. "Okay! I'd really like that, Mr. Spirit."
