It was a decent party, he supposed, especially considering that it was thrown together last minute and the constricted space. Nothing close to München but the atmosphere was similar enough for Germany to take some measure of comfort in it, especially with the past few weeks behind them.

But October 3, 2009 was not the end of that year's Oktoberfest. The day after was, with the recent extension to accommodate Tag der Deutschen Einheit, recent enough that Preußen, coming from seven decades past, would not know of it even when it was so centered around his person. Their reunification was important enough to Germany that the thought would not stop disturbing him even through the festivities, keeping him sober through the drinks.

He was standing by the kegs at that moment, nursing a cold glass of beer and trying to make a quick, mental inventory of everything the party had consumed throughout the day. Not an easy task given the beer swimming in his head...

Prussia was thoroughly tipsy, running around the festival with happiness that he hadn't felt for a while. Although he never showed it, he had been quite unhappy as of late ( ... )

Germany, as always, stoically nodded in agreement with his brother. It had been a thoroughly decent party, and he could see that people were happy or at least lightened enough by it to stop looking so destroyed. Even Kanda had come around.

"It... is excellent. Of course. We always know how to do it right, after all." A small hint of his old people's arrogance, mostly taken from Preußen.

At the back of his mind, he knew they should be doing better tomorrow, but the fact that it wasn't going to happen put a small frown on his face.

"Of course, we do! We work hard, dammit! We wouldn't be who we are without the people so this is a way for them to accept our gratitude! They should consider themselves lucky, kesesese." He placed an arm on Germany's shoulder, totally not tipsy. "Just sad it couldn't last any longer than this."

He nodded in agreement, slouching a little to accommodate the arm, and took another drink from his beer. Even if they were far away from home, they still had citizens here, and he and Preußen were probably driven by their combined need to protect them. That would never change in any world.

The words were out of his mouth before he could stop it, but it really was important to say it. Doing otherwise felt wrong. "Happy Unity Day."

"Happy Un..." Prussia had to pause for a moment. Was this a part of the tradition that he had forgotten? Something brother Bavaria had? ...no. It must have been... "Is that something special in your time?"

"Ja," he said. And then said no more. Germany had managed to make his greetings and that was fine with him.

"...and? What's it about?"

It looked like Prussia was not going to leave it alone until he hears about this holiday. What could they be unifying? Businesses? Alcohol?

Germany didn't look at him, but stared instead at his half-empty mug. "Our reunification. After the second World War, we are divided for several decades into east and west." It was easier to say this than expected. Human constitution to alcohol had some uses.

Before he went to take another sip from his mug, he paused midway. Something didn't sit quite well with him about the statement. Maybe it was the whole "divided" thing. "Wait, wait, back up, West. What do you mean 'divided'?"

His face turned into something serious as he imagined what in the world he could be talking about. Were they really torn apart from each other? What? Why?

"Divided. Your empire was... abolished in name, but however, you remained in existence. They put a..." Germany swallowed and refilled his mug. "They put a wall between us."

The conversation was becoming difficult, and Germany desperately wished that Preußen wouldn't pursue the topic further. It would be a pity to ruin his brother's mood with his insistence on tradition. Germany shouldn't have opened his big mouth.

"I...knew about the end of my country, but..."

This was when he had to pause for real. He thought about what Germany had said and suddenly there was a bit of fury in his eyes. Whether the anger rose from the drinking, he wasn't entirely sure but one thing for sure, he did not miss one important word.

"Who's 'they'?"

Germany glanced at Preußen, alarmed. He didn't want to cultivate bad blood between his brother and the other countries here. It would not do. "It-- It is of no matter. We are reunited not very long after, and that is why on some years, Oktoberfest extends a day."

"It is of matter."

After all, West was West. He would do stupid things forever, and would do whatever he could from not telling his big brother just what the problem was and who might have caused it.

"If you don't tell me, I will find it in a book anyway. Finding a wall like that to where we celebrate an entire day for it...shouldn't be that hard."

Germany very much doubted that their own history would be reflected in the books here. After all, with a different set of enemies, humanity was unlikely to manage world wars between themselves. It defied all logic and common sense.

But this was Preußen, and Germany could not deny his brother for very long. Maybe he could give him a watered down version...

"It's..." he started, voice strained. "After we lost the world war and you were abolished, the Allied decided to help us recover. But, however, Russland did not agree with their methods and so decided to cut away. You... were taken from me, while what remained continued to be occupied by Amerika, Britannien and Frankreich. A wall was put up in 1961 around what had then become West Berlin, which separated us for a while, until its fall and our reunification in 1990. And that is Unity Day."
