He wasn't yet certain whether he should be irritated at being interrupted. What little he'd absorbed from his readings needed to be put into action, and there was little point in wasting time here. Still, Sephiroth found himself waiting silently just away from the base of the ladder while the fool busied himself with the books.

Really, was the only point to stop him merely to waste his time? If that was the case, Sephiroth wouldn't hesitate in cutting the ladder in half and allowing for the parasitic fool to fall to the floor in revenge. It was petty, but it would at least make him feel a little satisfied.

The grin did nothing to change his thoughts on the situation, and when the request was made, he simply stared at the other. He was being asked to grab a worthless book for someone? Sephiroth didn't know whether to be amused or insulted by the thought of it all.

Eyes narrowed, Sephiroth eventually drew his gaze over to the required shelf. It only took a moment to locate the spine of the book in question, and with a warning edge to his tone, the ex-General's attention shifted back to the fool up the ladder, "The book you desire remains on the self."

“Thanks for checking for me.” His tone was still light and cordial, but there was an undeniable underlying of respect - Hughes was no Mustang, who knew when to bow down (the man wasn’t stupid: they wouldn’t have been as good of friends if they hadn’t) but often didn’t. The edge of warning was noted, too, but - in this case just like Roy - it barely left any effect.

Instead, his thoughts were along the lines of what an off way of talking, is that old English? and wow, his hair’s really silver. One might have thought he’d have had some deeper analysis going on, with the situation at hand, but it wasn’t to be so. Maes was still a normal guy, after all.

Normal, but not necessarily conventional. He slid down the ladder, feet hooked around the outside, stopping promptly a scant three rungs above the end, books still tucked under his arm and a tilt to his head. The book you desire-- no recognition. Or just this silver-haired guy being a grouch. Either way was fine.

“Would you be the type for poetry, sir?”

The thanks drew a confused frown from the ex-General. Why others felt the need to throw around such useless and hollow words was beyond him. His actions were hardly deserving of them, and besides that, he simply didn't want them. Sephiroth would have found it far more tolerable if his efforts had been ignored and him being left to carry on.

His attention shifted over to the other as they slid down the ladder, and he gained a momentary flash of that idiotic SOLDIER doing something so foolish and reckless. The thought was quickly pushed to the back of his mind before he cautiously regarded the man at the question.

"Do I appear to be in the poetry section?" Sephiroth asked in return. He couldn't understand the logic behind the initial question, unless this confusing parasite was an individual who enjoyed it.

"Not at the moment. But not being in that section doesn't mean you don't like it- I mean, do you like reading about history?" A second question to add to that first, eyes blinking toward Sephiroth (at least, he thought it was Sephiroth-- very, very sure it was Sephiroth) before turning to the bookshelves, seeking out the Odysseus book and skimming his hand up to its binding, just before taking the one next to it. A book of facts on modern Greece. That had been one of the countries who had died while in Death City, Hughes knew.

Learning about 'him' wouldn't change a thing about what had happened, but it could come in use. A lot of this world's dealings seemed to be related to the Greeks somehow, for whatever reason.

Ah, right, he had someone to talk to--

"Or was that just another way of saying 'no?''" Eyes back to Sephiroth, slipping yet another book under his arm.

When the words continued to flow out, Sephiroth felt himself frown. What did it matter what he liked or didn't like? Besides, he was hardly going to admit to anyone, least of all someone unknown, that most reading material in his world was something he had never been able to indulge in.

"I grew tired of books long ago," Sephiroth cautiously said. He had spent more than enough time in the Nibelheim mansion to fill a lifetime in his opinion, and Sephiroth felt no desire to return to reading anything remotely similar. To him, he felt a stigma towards the written word and trusted it as little as those who held none of his cells.

He had almost thought that this conversation was done, but as he moved to walk off, the irritating fool felt it prudent to remind the ex-General of his presence. Frowning in annoyance, he glance back to the other, "I hold no interest in poetry."

That was actually... Well, it shouldn't have been, and it was only a bit, but Hughes rarely found himself surprised, so he held on to this one. Sephiroth just seemed like a reading type, but he also sounded like a bit of someone who fell off his rocker (in the dangerous way: rationale was still there), so maybe the two points contradicted each other. Who knew.

There was annoyance being directed back at him, but he supposed you had to take it to get to chat with this fellow. Grew tired of books, grew tired of people. What a shame.

Not so much a shame he wouldn't keep talking back. The obvious question was so what are you doing here, but he went with, "None? So what do you do during your free time?" Easy, lightly curious tone.

It was fortunate that the obvious question wasn't asked, but that hardly stopped Sephiroth's sense of annoyance. The question asked was one he hadn't expected, and it actually caught him off guard to not give an answer right away.

"I contemplate events of the past," he murmured before falling silent. It had always been far more than that, but that was apart of himself that he kept locked away even from Cloud. The monster still locked away inside of him was one be battled every day to keep chained within. Glancing away from the other at the thought, Sephiroth found his gaze shifting over to regard the opposite bookshelf.

He'd said more than enough as it was. Stepping away, the ex-General began heading off down the aisle.

That's it is what he would have said, if the other's pause and look off hadn't been telling enough (and the fact that that wasn't something to joke about; no, it sombered everything up rather nicely. made him wonder at the odds of being able to change that, too, because that's just how he thought). Instead, Hughes kept quiet for a moment - let the other turn away and begin off, at least, before taking a step up one rung of the ladder, single free hand curling around the rail. He was done in this section, but that didn't mean there wasn't the possibility of skating it off by himself.

"Ah, one last thing!" He was craning his head back, looking down the aisle - Sephiroth not too far off as for this to be too annoying (maybe). "Good luck with what you're trying to do!"

Half-salute, and he was about ready to push the ladder away, too.

Sephiroth's retreat paused at the sudden call from the man behind him. Whatever reason behind the gesture caused his muscles to tense, but that hardly stopped him from glancing back over his shoulder at the other. There was something that was off about the other male, and if Sephiroth had cared more, he might have considered looking into it more. As it was, the ex-General simply regarded him coolly.

The offer that was given caused his neutral mask to slip momentarily as surprise flashed over his expression. He wasn't quite certain what to make of the whole thing. The people within the city seemed to confuse him more often than not.

Frowning subtly, Sephiroth said nothing as the half-salute was given. He glanced away and began silently heading back off again. There was much to think about.
