[nill is just going to stare at that washing machine. what is happening ... why are they holding cakes to the washing machine ... WHY ARE THEY PUTTING THE CAKES IN THE WASHING MACHINE ......!!!!

hurriedly sets her laundry away and pulls her communicator out and then taps the guy in a rush]

don't put the cake in there the wwashing machine might break put it in the fridge instead or eat it otherwise it'll go to waste |

[Sandry looked up from putting the cake inside the machine to read the offered message.]

But all the other machines seemed to like the cake fairly well...

[He feels that tap on the shoulder, spins around, and blinks at the little girl there.] Hello? Do you need to use the machi...oh. [Finally he notices the communicator, and leans forward to read it.

How can it break them? It's just cake. And Sandry, the other machines didn't eat all of it. Look, there's still heaps in there! [Merlin rolls his eyes, as if this was obvious somehow] When they ate the socks the socks were completely gone. We just haven't found a cake that they really like yet. [Turning to look at Nill again] Do you know what they'd like to eat?

[nill looks from the guy to the girl back, and fidgets. her wings flutter uncomfortably. okay, so maybe they don't know what washing machines are for? if that's the case --]

machines don't eat. like [she pauses to think of something to compare it with, and then:] tables. they have a function but they don't need to eat and that's the same with the washing machine. and socks tend to get lost there but eventually you find them like all other things that you lose

washing machines use electricity which is not food but kind of the same like how plants use sunlight i guess?? and erm

[she sighs.]

look i'll just show you how to actually use it |

But they eat socks! Surely it can handle other things besides electricity.

[She looks back at the cake that they stuck into the washer. Perhaps washers simply didn't like cake, that was it.]

Yes, the socks always disappear. There's only one way in and out! If they don't eat them, then where do they go? [turning to Sandry] Or maybe that's magic too?

nonono [dfgfdg frustrated hand gestures go here]

it uses electricity to move. the reason why the other machines stopped is because you put the cake in and it probably clogged the machine and that's why you should put the cakes in the fridge instead. socks do not always disappear they're just misplaced in your laundry and the machine isn't alive it doesn't need to eat and

[GIVES UP.]

i will show you

[MOVES to one of those other machines who aren't ... destroyed by the cakes, sob, and loads in her clothes. adds detergent, softener, sets it on. in a second or two the machine whirrs, and it starts on the cleaning cycle.

goes back to them!]then you just wait for it to get clean. if you're careful you know that the clothes will all be there yes even the socks they won't get lost so long as you're careful not to let them get lost when you take out the clothes. there's no magic involved you just press and it'll work. also we need to clean those machines with the cake in them otherwise they might get mad at us for breaking them and i ( ... )

Oh. But that still doesn't explain how the water gets inside. Could you explain that, as well?

[She is so confused. She gives a look to Merlin for an explanation.]

[Sorry Sandry, but Merlin will be no help] But we already know how to make it work! See look, Sandry's washing is over in that one over there. [he gestures vaguely to it] We...just didn't know what they eat. Are you sure they don't eat socks, because I've had quite a few of mine go in but not come out.

Oh, and it doesn't explain how the water spins around like that either.

the [pause; how to phrase it .... FUCK IT NILL IS JUST GOING TO TRY HER BEST AGAIN]

the water comes from a water pipe that connects to the machine and the machine has a mechanism that makes it turn and it turns because of electricity which comes from an electrical source

[sighs]

it doesn't eat because it's not alive and it doesn't need to and you're wasting all these cakes and they don't eat socks i mean it

Oh. So it's another one of those technology things?

[She looks back at the washers with cake in them. No wonder they didn't seem happy.]

But...how do we placate them, then? They seem angry.

It comes from pipes? Does that mean there's a well nearby? [He gets up and starts trying to peer around one of the machines, to see if he can find the pipe]

[He also looks at Nill intently, to see how she answer's Sandry's question

[thoughtful frowning!]

there's a water source, doesn't have to be a well i think, i don't know what they're called. and .... um. they need to be cleaned, and then they'll be okay i think. the cake needs to come out and you need to stop feeding them cake |

"Stop feeding them cake. All right, we can do that." Sandry looked regretfully at the washers. She really was sure that they could eat human food; perhaps they simply didn't like cake. She resolved to figure out what food they actually liked sometime soon.

But how to I stop them from eating my socks? [Merlin looked at the washing machines miserably. He'd liked some of those socks.]

[He blinks up at Nill, as if just realising something] Sorry, I don't actually know your name. I'm Merlin? It's nice of you to help us.
