[Grocery Store!] rabukidastrophe August 13 2010, 07:25:48 UTC
"-I'm telling you we can get away with it. It's free anyway, and if there isn't a law against me working as a host, we can definitely take some drinks baaaahh hah?!"

Kida's attempt to convince Mikado to purchase several varieties of alcohol along with the other basic shopping essentials was cut short as there was a loud bang, followed by several others which shook the floor and made jars and cans jitter off the shelves of the grocery store and onto the floor.

He looked up, almost expecting to see the ceiling carved open or collapsing, but is relieved to see that the earth quake didn't seem to be destroying the building. Not yet anyway, but he held his breath a few extra seconds.

And while he was waiting to see if any more tremors came, grocery basket held loosely in one hand, something else hit him instead. Like a strong gust of wind but not one that stopped at his flesh, and instead seemed to push through it, into what Kida could now recognize as his soul; the part of him that pulsed when he resonated with Celty. Now it suddenly stopped, then shook, and seemed to tighten inside him like a clenched muscle. A brief moment of flat terror raced through him, and for a second he forgot where he was, or who he was with, and took a step back.

A jolt rushed through Mikado at the quake, abruptly wrenching him out of listening to a word Kida was saying, and he went quiet as well. And then, just like Kida, Mikado utterly froze as his guts wrenched and a slow crawl prickled over his skin.

There was none of the excitement that usually accompanied that now-familiar pressure of fear squeezing Mikado's body into a dead still stand. He made a small choking noise in his throat as he jumped abruptly to desperation.

He dropped the basket, Kida wasn't exactly sure when. Nor was he really aware of... well. Really anything going on around him.

It was the Madness Wavelength, even past his sudden gripping terror he was fully aware of that. He'd experienced it at the battle at NORAD, the way it flickered in and out him the entire battle as he moved to and from the range of Takeshi's aura. And while it hadn't done much more than upset him then, halfway through the battle it had surged, and startled him, scared him, the kishin eggs had strengthened and he'd gotten stupidly hurt.

Those cuts seemed to burn now and he reached to his side.

But even then it hadn't been anything like this. Never this powerful, never this frightening even when Squalo had turned on them, lost in the grip of his own madness.

He tried to lift his head and look around and found he couldn't. Tried to move his legs, and found them frozen. It was just like that time. Just like before. He was frozen in the rain and Saki...

Mikado did his best to breathe, his mind racing for information as he tried to stop shaking. The Madness Wavelength he'd heard about in class. That could be it. But they were supposed to be safe from it in Death City.

But of course they weren't. The attack from right before he arrived wasn't supposed to happen either.

He squeezed his arms with his hands, trying and failing to calm down. What could he do? What was getting past the barrier? He was so scared. He didn't have the Dollars here, didn't have anyone, without anybody backing him, hell, even with that, he was completely useless, completely weak.

"A... ah..."

Frozen, like a statue of ice, that's what it felt like. Ice crawling up his feet, his legs, his waist. There was no way he could save anyone, no way he could help her. No way he could face it if she looked at him with hate for what he'd gotten her into.

And then he heard a gasp, over the sound of the rain and his pounding heart and the crackling of the ice crawling up his legs and Kida forgot he couldn't move, head shooting up but not seeing anything for a second but dreary streets of Ikebukuro.

"Mikado?"

No. No nonono no no. This wasn't right. Was it? Where had Mikado gone? He'd been right here, hadn't he? They'd been shopping and...

Kida's eyes focused on a can of green beans, a can of peaches, lying on the wet pavement outside the parking garage. The blue plastic shopping basket.

Not right. The madness. It was getting to him. He stumbled back until he hit a concrete wall/grocery shelf and looked around wildly, trying to redefine reality. "Mikado?!"

Mikado immediately replied to hearing his name. "Masaomi?"

What was that uneasiness in Masaomi's voice? Was he being smothered by this too? Masaomi had been through so much more than he had, all alone. Was he angry? Was he done? He lifted his hands to his ears, staring blankly ahead of him at a blur of dropped goods and floor, before Masaomi shouted his name a second time and he jerked his head towards the noise--

Only to see Masaomi soaked in blood, a bright, bright red sopping his hair in splotches, staining his skin and soaking the yellow scarf tied around his throat.

He froze.

"Mikado..."

The ice was starting to climb up his legs again and he tried to ignore it. This wasn't reality. Because Mikado hadn't been there when he'd failed Saki, because if he had, if Mikado knew he'd never be able to endure it.

He grit his teeth and closed his eyes, if he couldn't see it, it wasn't real, right?

But he still felt the rain on his shoulders.

"... it's the madness wavelength." He opened his eyes and the scene had changed, and it felt like he'd woken up from a dream only to fall back into another one. This time, hospital room lit with ripe yellow light. The bed sheets were turned back, there was an intent of a body, but no one was in the bed. Kida felt his throat choke closed. "Saki..."

"Masaomi..."

["Were you the one who made Saki cry?"] The memory shot through Mikado like lightning. He was right, the madness wavelength was horrible for Masaomi. Mikado forced himself forward, grabbed Masaomi by the shoulders and squeezed.

"We have to get out of here-- we have to go," Mikado said. He kept hoping the blood all over his best friend would disappear if he squeezed his eyes or blinked. "You're right."

Kida felt his body shake and between one blink and the next Mikado was in front of him, in the yellow hospital room.

"You can't be here..." He muttered in automatic response. Absolutely couldn't, unacceptable.

No no not real not real, it was a dream, you're dreaming, Masaomi. Kida squeezed his eyes closed again and said, in a faintly shaky voice. "Where am I..?"

I need someone with immunity for Masaomi. I need a Weapon-- anybody.

"W-where? It's Death City."

Right, Death City. Kida lifted a hand to his face and tried to summon up Death City, and Mikado, and they had been...

The store, shopping.

Kida looked up over his hand and found upset shelving and flouresent lights past Mikado's worried face.

Except... the rain was still falling, rolling down Mikado's face and dripping off the shelves.

Ignore it.

Kida grabbed the front of Mikado's shirt, grateful that his fingers can close on it. "...Anri."

At the name, a new wave of paranoia swept over him.

"...We have to find her," he said.

Kida nodded. He was reluctant to let go of Mikado's jacket, like the world might disappear again. But he couldn't waste time that they needed to look for Anri being frozen. Kida let go, pulling away, little shards of ice falling off his fist.

"She's probably at the communal, right? Anri doesn't go out that much on her own."

Talking made him feel a little better, and he looked up and down the aisle, grateful when they didn't transform into anything (though the rain kept falling) then grabbed Mikado's wrist and pulled him out of the aisle and into another, apparently looking for something.

"Wh--Masaomi," he said, stumbling with him, "S-stop, in your condition-- you need to stop!"

"I'm fine. I just need something..."

Kida drags Mikado from one aisle to the next, almost in a frenzy, and stops when he finds the cleaning supplies. Midway down the aisle he finds brooms and mops, and after locating one with a wooden handle, holds it up to examine the grain before breaking it in half between his foot and the tiled (wet cement) floor. The broken end comes to one, long, sharp, and mostly clean splinted point.

He does this entirely without letting go of Mikado's wrist.

When he splits it, Mikado gets a sudden, abrupt flash of a thick wooden splinter spinning up to embed itself in Kida's face. He lets out a loud, alarmed yell and grabs at the air right in front of him. When his hand closes on nothing, and only gets covered in splattering blood, he freezes.
