Tassadar was on the move the moment that the order had been given. The Protoss were known for their strength and speed in battle, and that much was easily shown as the templar's long legs effortlessly took him over the terrain as if there were no problems at all.
He could see their foes beginning to home in on their location. The two creatures he saw coming into view reminded him well of the infested Terran he'd witnessed on the battlefield. It would not bode them well if they were of any relation, for they were, perhaps, the most dangerous strain of the Zerg just shy of the Queen of Blades herself.
"I will draw their attention to see if there are any that go unseen to us, and may Adun watch over you both," The templar communicated to the pair behind him. While he knew well that both Gaara and Lee were accomplished fighters, Tassadar couldn't help but take the lead.
There were two enemies finally crested the hill in front of them, and he wasn't yet willing to place all of his faith that it would only be those two they were fighting. He'd been in far too many battles with the Zerg to grow used to such small numbers, especially while on enemy territory. While this may not be Char, the templar was hardly going to let his guard down until their mission had been a success.
"Nataku, I stand ready," Tassadar said as his eyes flashed yellow and he leapt in towards the middle of the two incoming abominations.
Gaara's success with the first kishin had made him eager to fight another. His skin still tingled with the electric excitement of battle. The fear was still there, in the background of his thoughts, but it was quickly receding. Lee's weapon form felt light in his hand, and he spun it easily as he approached Tassadar's towering form.
The two kishin drew nearer, their sharp teeth bared. Both were just as grotesque and unnatural-looking as the one he'd destroyed.
Gaara glanced at Tassadar, then back at the pair of kishin. "Lee and I can take one of them."
The confidence from making their first kill helped ease Lee's own tension, replacing it with the familiar excitement and anticipation of battle. It wasn't the same as fighting alone, but his natural urge to test himself was starting to translate over into a desire to prove what they could do as a pair. There wasn't time to talk, and Lee waited for Tassadar's consent. The staff was nearly humming in Gaara's hands with restrained excitement and energy.
These creatures -- he wasn't sure what to think of them. Hideous? Frightening? Those words meant very little to the clone. One need only think of them as obstacles. They should not be thought of as anything else, correct? Easier to classify them as such, rather than muse over what it was that they should be listed as.
This was familiar to him -- to strike out first the moment that it was ordered to do so. It was different with the two behind that would take care of them should any hidden enemies attack. To put faith into others, Nataku certainly respected Tassdar's ability to do so. It was always such cold logic that carried out his actions; he would win because he was willing to sacrifice everything while his enemies most likely had a point that they would not cross. It was simple and effective, with little emotion behind it.
Yet now, his meister's confidence gave him confidence mixing with the respect felt. Something that he had not actually felt before. I understand. The weapon answered as it unraveled itself quickly from the Protoss's arm at the start of the jump. By the end of the movement, it already unwound and lashed out at the left creature; whipping the cloth downward like a mace to smash through the monster's skull, or whatever else that should be raised to protect itself.
Tassadar's towering form landed heavily between the two kishin. His opponents movements were fast, but it appeared as though Nataku's Weapon form struck the vile creature down as he swung his arm around.
He'd heard Gaara's call out from behind him, and feeling the kishin beginning to charge in towards his back, Tassadar balanced on one leg before kicking out hard to slam his foot hard into the creature's chest as he sent it flying. He could already taste the scent of other creatures beginning to head in their direction, and as the kishin flew over towards where Gaara was charging in with Lee, Tassadar mentally called out to them, "Two more will approach from your right within moments."
Now that he knew how the creatures smelt, Tassadar could lock onto each individual scent on the air. Beside the two coming in from the side, the Protoss warrior could taste three hidden but approaching from their left, and another pair about the crest the hill in front of them. While it wasn't spoken, the information he'd gathered was telepathically transmitted to not only Nataku, but the two others he was fighting alongside while Tassadar took off after the three heading in from the left. The last thing he wanted was for to get boxed in on their position.
Pulling his arm back, Tassadar didn't need to say anything in regards to Nataku returning to his arm as his long strides rapidly took him over the terrain.
The first of three kishin appeared, the creature snapping its jaws in hunger, before two others clawed their way into sight moments after. There was no pause in their movement as they saw Tassadar's large frame barreling in towards them. The only thing on their mind was the hunger they felt and the meal delivering itself to them as the first kishin charged in while followed closely by the other two.
"Aim to take the first off balance," Tassadar ordered Nataku as he sighted what was occurring. There was too high of a probability of injury if they focused their attention solely on taking out the first vile creature.
The kishin kicked over towards Gaara snarled viciously as it recovered from the attack. Its flailing limbs soon recovered while it regained control of its balance, and within moments, the enraged creature had set its hunger towards the meister's flesh. Claw like fingers snapped out towards the partnered pair as it attempt to cut the meister into ribbons.
The creature's speed was uncanny, and its claws and teeth looked capable of slicing through flesh. Gaara leaped back, avoiding the long, sharp-tipped fingers.
His body moved almost automatically, with no conscious thought from him. It was a strange feeling, and he wondered if Lee was responsible--if Gaara was somehow channeling his weapon's battle-reflexes and well-honed taijutsu skills through their link. Kuroro had said something about that...about how Lee could amplify Gaara's own skills through resonance. To discover that it was possible was exhilarating.
Smaller and slighter than their first opponent, the benefit of showed in the kishin's movement as it lunged forward past Gaara's strike. There was no thought of dodging in the attack, hunger driving the creature forward past reason or tactics. The blunt end of Lee's weapon form glanced off the lantern jaw of the creature, and another set of jagged teeth became visible as the kishin's mouth opened wide. Lee's heart lurched in his chest. It was too quick, too much- Gaara shouldn't even be out here at all. Not against enemies like this. Not with Tassadar's warning of more coming.
Trust me. He could put his faith in Gaara, or he could doubt him, but there was no middle ground.
The staff came up to block the attack, and the kishin's teeth closed around the staff. The creature pressed forward, teeth scraping against the staff with a harsh grating sound as it tried to chew through Lee's weapon form. He could feel the pressure, like someone squeezing his arm tightly, but the metal didn't give underneath the assault.
The ribbon was careful to stay out of Tassadar's way -- in means of being sure not to trip the other up as it twisted about in the air. It was an interesting sound and feeling to break that kishin's skull. He always felt it from when he controlled a ribbon, but now he could; the weakening of the bone before it shattered. The thought was left where it was, shared only with Tassadar, since he had to return to focusing on the other enemies that were approaching.
Kishin were troublesome in their own right. When defeated, it seemed no body was left, but just the red soul. No time to even eat his reward, but then, they were supposed to be collected for everyone. Nataku would have liked to have used the defeated creature as a weapon instead of lashing out to trip the creature indicated to him. As before, the ribbon lashed out to swing low, wrapping around one of the legs before jerking backward. Not enough to tear the limp off but at least enough to knock it off balanced.
Just as the weapon was going to pull back to Tassadar, one of the kishin easily leaped over the fallen to catch the ribbon in its teeth. The clone had forgotten that sharpened objects could cut through the material when he was not using his barrier technique. It was a hollow thought and did little to help the situation as he felt his cloth begin to tear. Like a dog that had caught the end of some toy; it pulled backward, pushing its claws into the material to get a better grasp as the other kishin began to push itself up.
It hurts. An oddly bland thought that seemed out of place as the white of the cloth began to turn a dark red; spreading down the rest of the ribbon. Nataku never did respond to pain normally. He was aware that it was hurting and that he probably should be screaming -- that would be the normal response -- but if he returned to his human form, what would happen to Tassadar? It was his duty to protect him, after all. The other end tightened around the Protoss's arm as he tried to yank himself free and caused more self-injury in the process.
There was the horrible sound of teeth gnashing against metal as the kishin's mouth closed around Lee's weapon form. The pain it felt from the previous strike wasn't even recognised above the deep hunger it felt, and having its meal so close only seemed to further enhance its drive.
The blood lust in its eyes was unmistakable, and after clenching its jaws tighter around Lee's weapon form, the kishin attempted to rip it from Gaara's grip. It's mouth was occupied, but during this time the kishin struck out towards Gaara's vulnerable sides with its long claws.
Tassadar yanked his arm out hard as Nataku's form moved out to wrap around the first kishin's legs. The creature fell hard to the ground, but his movements hadn't been fast enough as one of the two behind closed the distance with a rapid burst of speed. He could feel the pain rushing through Nataku's form moments before the blood was witness.
What level of limitation the templar held on him for Nataku's sake disappeared in that moment as the blue of his eyes suddenly blazed bright yellow. There was no sound from the Protoss, and as Nataku attempted to yank itself free, Tassadar lurched his arms forward to clamp his powerful hands around the beasts jaws. No mercy was given as he forced the jaws to open, and despite the resistance given, the templar managed to pry the fangs apart enough for his weapon to leave.
"Wrap back around my arm and recover," Tassadar ordered even as the claws of the third kishin scraped along his gold armour. He didn't release his hold on the kishin he'd grabbed, and within the next moment he swung the beast around until it slammed into the third. Releasing his hold, the templar sensed the first returning to his feet. He'd simply have to make do until his weapon had time enough to recover.
Eyes still burning yellow, Tassadar leapt up into the air as he back flipped himself over the first kishin and landed almost directly behind it. One hand snapped out to grab it by its head, while the other remained as far away from the creature as possible in order to keep Nataku from the battle. He near-effortlessly hoisted the creature from the ground. Sighting the other two scrambling back to their feet, Tassadar ignored the struggles the one in his possession attempted before deciding to use it as a weapon.
"For Adun!" He called out as he leapt back into the battle while swinging the captured kishin into the others.
At the scrape of fangs against the staff, a cold, sinking dread filled Gaara's stomach. There was no flicker of awareness or fear in the kishin's eyes; just blind animal hunger. Gaara's breathing quickened. The desire to kill flared, hot and bright as flame. "Let go of him, you filth," he said through gritted teeth, his voice a rough growl. He slammed one fist into the kishin's face, over and over, but its jaws remained locked firmly around the staff. The thing seemed to have no sense of pain.
Gaara winced as long claws scraped along his sides. His thick coat protected him from the worst of it. Though they burned, the cuts were shallow. His sweat-slicks hands tightened on the smooth metal. He heard Tassadar's battle cry and the snarls of the other kishin, but all his awareness was focused on the sharp teeth scraping against Lee. What would happen to Lee if he broke while he was in weapon form?
He forced his mind past the fear and rage, forced himself to think. Hitting the kishin with his own hands was no good. He couldn't do any damage to it without Lee. Then it struck him, so obvious he was amazed he hadn't thought of it earlier. "Shift to three-section form, Lee. Now."
"What?" Lee's reflection looked at Gaara, disbelief showing on his face. Gaara wasn't well-versed with a normal staff, but he was far better with one than with a three-section staff. One of Lee's decisions on coming into this battle had been to stay in bo form. It was still difficult for him to shift back, and it was difficult enough with Gaara using a weapon that he did know.
One look at Gaara's expression, though, stilled any other questions. Gaara was his partner. Lee trusted him. He had to trust him, and that meant going along with Gaara's judgment. The kishin's teeth clenched tighter around the staff as Lee reached inside to undo those locks that felt so much like the gates. The staff separated into three sections connected by chains. The top link was still held firmly within the kishin's mouth, but the bottom two were free. Before the monster could reason through the change, the bottom link of metal was driven firmly into its stomach.
The shock was enough for Gaara to wrench the weapon free, and the following blow caught the kishin directly between the eyes. There was a sick crunch as the weighted metal crushed through bone. The kishin disappeared, replaced by a glowing red soul.
Any sort of recovery would take too long. Even if it were to catch one's breath. Nataku slipped out of the creature's teeth and claws. He was far more concerned about his meister's well-being than his own. Far more concerned about the completion of the mission, or else there was no point to having come along. But he could use the other ribbon end to launch attacks rather than the now bloodied one.
Quickly pulling backward, he shifted to change which end was wrapped around Tassadar's arm for balance and resonance purposes. It took far more knots and ties to ensure that the bleeding portion would stay this time. I apologize for dirtying your armor. While now was most certainly not the time to do so, it seemed only right. The tone continued to be bland, but there was an obvious weakness to it.
The other ribbon end was slower as it was more or less compensating now. It really felt like his right portion of his body were cut in various places from the tearing of the kishin. However, they all could still fight. That was what they were meant to do, was it not? He could not look to Gaara or Lee, but understood that they felt the same. Nataku would now have to rely on Tassadar's speed to make up for the slight delay.
While one remained stunned, the ribbon end swung downward to try to impale it through the back. If he thought of irony, he recalled that was how he died -- tearing through the back, through all the layers that protected to puncture the heart. It seemed he was feeling a little vindictive toward the kishin about being injured in the first place.
The words meant nothing to the starved creature, and the growl it received was returned with a snarl. Fists slammed into the kishin's face, but it did little more than cause its teeth to slide down the length of the metal before it bit down harder. It could smell the scent of blood in the air as its claws racked its way down along Gaara's side.
It began to move while the two seemed to be in deep thought. Kicking off of the ground, the kishin had barely began to leap before it found the support of the staff changing and throwing the creature off balance. Sounding a strangled cry of surprise before one part of the link was slammed into its stomach. Screeching in return, the metal within its mouth was released in the next moment before the weapon slammed into its skull. The kishin's body disappeared only to be replaced by the red orb.
There was no time to enjoy the victory, however, as the two Tassadar had pre-warned Gaara and Lee about had already come into view and were charging in towards the pair. They didn't run in a straight line though, and as soon as they got within a few feet of their meal, they broke off to circle around the pair.
Tassadar slammed the body hard into the other two while they attempted to attack. The brutal attack managed to stun one of his opponents while the other rolled away a few metres before regaining its footing. He ignored it for now, and as Nataku impaled the stunned kishin, the templar slammed the enemy in his grasp back down against the ground.
His large armoured foot shot out to pin the creature to the ground while his hand kept the gnashing teeth from striking out at Nataku. Shifting his weight, Tassadar brought his other foot around to press one of the flailing arms to the ground as he ordered, "Now, Nataku!"
The fact that the other kishin was already darting back in was of no concern to the templar. They'd deal with it once this enemy was taken care of.
Gaara exhaled a breath of relief as the kishin dissolved. He looked down at Lee and saw tooth-marks denting the dark metal. Shame flooded him. The damage didn't appear serious, but still--he had failed Lee by allowing this to happen. There was no time to dwell on it, however. "Are you all right?" he asked, still breathless from the fight.
He heard a snarl and looked up to see two more kishin loping toward them. Gaara tensed and glanced down at Lee again. They had only a few seconds to spare before their enemies closed in. His pulse raced. He had very little practice wielding Lee's three-section form, but there might not be time for him to change back. He faced the approaching kishin, Lee's two outer sections gripped tightly in his hands. "Change back into a solid staff, if you can. If not...I'll manage."
"I am fine," Lee responded swiftly. "Do not worry about me."
There were more important things to worry about, like the pair of kishin closing in on them. It'd been difficult enough to take them down one at a time. The Chuunin focused, but the nervous tension in the air mixed with inexperience. If he'd had longer, if there'd been more time to prepare in the first place- but no. The sections of the staff failed to reconnect. Precious time was lost on the attempt to shift, and the kishin to the right leaped forward.
It was good that the bodies disappeared when the attack carried through to kill the creature. Otherwise, he would have been even more delayed in having to pull himself free from corpse. Now he could just easily move to the next attack that would help Tassadar; curling the ribbon around the body of the captured monster. The ribbon began to contract much like a snake would around its prey -- quickly tightening around the body as it shattered bones and punctured vital organs until the body gave way. More vicious in the attack as it was held down by his meister, and could be end with the alien being hurt.
Three more. Not that Nataku had to alert Tassadar of this news; he had been the one that told them of it before, but it was mostly for his own acknowledgment. Merely listing how many it would be before they could reasonably return to heal. The bloodied ribbon that was tied to his meister twisted about to tie another knot as it was slipping just a bit. Not enough blood loss to be concerned. He alerted calmly, once more for himself. It was mostly just difficult to get a good grip onto the Protoss with the end as it was.
Whipping the ribbon around, Nataku turned to the other kishin that had lunged at Gaara and Lee. It seemed like they would not be able to help anyway, not until the last of their original lot was dealt with. Even then, nothing that he could do at the moment with his delayed speed, once more relying on Tassadar -- and those two abilities -- to handle what was to come. There was a vague feeling of regret of not being able to help in the first place, that transferred to his meister, even if the clone did not say anything himself.
He could see their foes beginning to home in on their location. The two creatures he saw coming into view reminded him well of the infested Terran he'd witnessed on the battlefield. He faced the approaching kishin, Lee's two outer sections gripped tightly in his hands. "Change back into a solid staff, if you can. If not...I'll manage."
