Poor Aya! XP resonant_eve June 19 2010, 07:02:51 UTC
Candy? Real Candy? Genuine, sweet and squishy candy? It was a dream come true, if only one simple problem would go away. But the glue seemed there to stay and even trying to pull her fingers free one final time bought her another brief but harsh stab of sharp pain. It just wouldn’t give, making any attempt to reach for the bag painful and not to mention revealing.

“Oh…”

Disappointing enough, her mind refused to stop thinking about how much she’d missed candy. Until Aya had introduced her to the contents of the bag she never thought she’d experience it again. Admittedly it wasn’t a life-threatening loss but it suddenly seemed to matter much more now that it was there, within her reach and oh so tempting. It was her miss candy even more.

“Thank you…”

Pouting her lip mid sentence, Eve’s gaze drifted from the gummy skulls to her sister and then settled on the floor, two strangely positioned hands with fingers stuck to opposable thumbs pushing forcefully tight against her back. Would she? Could she? It was going to take a lot of courage to confess. More than she had on her little shoulders.

“I’m not worried about being here, honest... I have you Aya.” She nodded her head unwaveringly, guilty blue eyes trying not to focus on the scene just several feet from the kitchen counter just in case the thought of what really worried her would slip out and be broadcast to the small but very captive audience.

“I’m…” She was supposed to say ok; instead she chose the first thought that came to mind.

“I’m worried you’ll be mad.” As if her most intimate thoughts had been divulged by an compassionless assailant her head shot up, baby blues blinking confusedly. The words had suddenly slipped off her tongue, unbidden and certainly not thought through. Couldn't risk an apology though, just in case, and the smaller blond simply focused on flinging a set of arms around her sister, keeping Aya pinned while trying to convey that she was truly sorry for all that had happened.

“Don’t be mad. I can fix it.” She would if Aya gave her a chance… Somehow…

Aya slowly set the bag on the counter without looking at it, staring at Eve with a mixed feeling of concern and suspicion. What was she hiding?

"Mad, huh?" Instead of starting an investigation and making her companion feel even more guilty, Aya took another route. The only time she could conceive of being mad would be if Eve had run outside and had been caught. Or if she had spoken to a stranger, but Aya had a feeling that wasn't the case.

"Eve," she began slowly, glancing around the room to make sure nothing seemed like it was about to set fire. Did she smell gas? No, that was ridiculous. "What happened?"

What happened?

“I…”

Eve swallowed noisily, swinging her gaze to match her older sisters, a twin set of blue eyes mirroring the past events with each relevant bit of furniture her glance passed over. From the small apartment’s second desk and its disheveled draws, to the bathroom door staring at her back perilously, all of it seemed relevant to the incident fresh in her mind. She just had to confess…

“I glued my hands together Aya... And the glue won’t come off...“

As guilty and apprehensive as she was feeling, she’d rather the lecture come after Aya saw just what lengths she’d gone to be responsible. Nodding frankly, the small girl drew a nervous breath, let it out and finally removed her hands from her back, clenched fingers ready to greet the world. One confession down; one to go.

"It was an accident. Honest. I was drawing a picture for you because I wanted to be good, but I broke something. I tried to put it back together Aya, honest. I spent ages looking everywhere for some glue so I could stick it back together and make it up to you.…”

Following a small anxious pause, Eve cautiously flexed her fingers, showing just how ‘stuck’ they were.

“Somehow the glue was just to sticky.”

"Glued?" Aya repeated incredulously, her eyes widening. Did she find super glue somewhere and go to town? Oh no-- did she eat it? Aya felt her heart beat quickly rise as she stared wide-eyed at Eve.

And suddenly, it all softened away as the blonde explained, almost like a tornado had ran through the room and then swiftly left out the window. Her eyes drifted down to Eve's small hands stuck together like a doll's. Now that she understood, Aya had to consider the next course of action carefully, as Eve looked as if she was prepared to face the death penalty for her crime. And while it was true Aya sometimes had to be stern about certain things, accidents were hardly one of them.

"You said it yourself, Eve," the cop said, somewhat soothingly, or the best that she could muster. "It was an accident." She reached out to grasp her hands and examined them carefully. "Besides, you did the right thing. You told me the truth." Now she had to beam like a proud parent, and used her free hand to lightly ruffle the blonde's hair affectionately.

"Let's run your hands though some warm water," she suggested instead, not wanting the child to dote on what she had done. The mere thought of Eve being sad made Aya feel heavy-hearted. She couldn't handle it. "And then I'll tell you about the surprise I have for you." Without another word, she ushered Eve toward the kitchen sink and turned on the faucet.

“Surprise?”

Shock and no small measure of just-got-caught guilt were quickly pushed aside as Eve grinned excitedly, following her sister to the sink as she watched the older woman twist the lever next to the faucet. She had to adjust it to the right temperature but soon Eve’s hands were under the steady stream of warm water and the two were sharing a warm, if not childish moment together. All things considered, stuff could have been a worse, Eve decided; a lot worse. After all, Aya seemed okay. Possibly a little confused though, but certainly not angry.

So somehow, she’d done right by owning up to her mistake, even if she got her hands stuck? Truth was a wonderful thing. “Thanks for not getting mad at me Aya.”

Soon a good semi-handful of liquid that seemed to serve double duty as hand wash and dish washing liquid was squeezed into her hand and, turning the side of her hands to the stream, she began to methodically soap herself up as best she could. She’d been expecting to get the same result as her shampoo venture of course, but instead found that after a few minutes her thumb could separate from the rest of the stickyness. Pretty impressive!

“It’s coming off Aya!”

Eve wasn't sure whether to laugh at the sheer silliness of it all or be grateful. She guessed it didn't matter. She felt hurt and stiff but the glue was starting to give. The thought of being free to wriggle every finger separately sounded like a small piece of heaven.

“Then you can show me your surprise!”

Aya had to smile even as they scrubbed glue off of Eve's little fingers, to see the excitement and relief on her sisters' face. It was worth it, she thought, being stuck in this place-- if she could spend moments like these with Eve. It didn't matter where they were anymore, New York or Nevada, so long as they had each other.

"Yeah?" Aya replied in amusement, watching Eve's fingers slowly separate. "Did y'think they'd be stuck together forever?"

Dish soap and warm water really pretty much could fix anything, in Aya's opinion. Once Eve's fingers could flex naturally as if glue had never been there at all, Aya turned off the faucet and lightly rubbed a hand towel over them. After ruffling the girl's hair with it playfully, she picked Eve up and carried the girl over her shoulder out to the balcony.

Setting her down, Aya crouched beside her and pointed upward to the floating island in the sky. "See that? It's a carnival." Aya grinned a little. "Wanna go?"

“Surprise!?” Eve squealed, caught up in a whirlwind of arms and excitement, thrown like some giggly beast over Aya’s strong shoulders. Her fingers were free to grasp Aya’s shirt and pull herself up but she was happy just to hang over and watch the floor fly by, propped up on her sisters shoulder to be carried off to the alluring surprise. Not a moment too soon.

“Come on Aya, I want to see, I want to see!” A heart childish laughter rose from the giggly tickle in her throat as Eve closed her eyes, images of possible surprises flashing in front of her eyes. A puppy. A friend. An impossibly large pile of candy just for her.

“Aya…” The sounds of a sliding door caught her off guard. “It’s outside?”

The sunlight was very bright, melting on her face and making patterns like tree branches on the back of her eyelids. Wincing harshly, the lids slowly lifted as Aya set her down on the balcony, the event with all its special potential coming into focus. It was a carnival; a floating carnival where thoughts of candy floss and carousel rides danced in her mind as if begging impatiently.

“That’s amazing!”

Hooking one arm over and around her sisters shoulders Eve stood in awe, trying to find the right words to thank her. Only one question came to mind.

“Can we go now?”
