SOUL EATER CANON SWAP
• Kairi and Naminé met at six years old. They almost instantly became best friends thanks Kairi's cheery personality, and over the years Naminé was able to come out of her very reserved shell thanks to it.
• Naminé's madness and insanity started to develop as they grew up-- though she was able to keep it controlled, or at least hidden. They didn't know it at the time, but near-constant exposure to Kairi's anti-insanity wavelength was able to prevent it from surfacing.
• One day, Naminé exploded. She was drawing and keeping to herself when several bullies came to take her sketchbook away. Kairi wasn't there to stand up for her, so Naminé had to try to recover it herself. Whey they refused and continued to taunt and make fun of her, something snapped, and her insanity caused her to stab several pencils clean through their arms. Before her madness drove her to kill them, Kairi came to the rescue, and she was able to soothe her friend's troubled soul. The two of them thought that the explosion was due to something inside of Naminé that they referred to as "darkness".
• After the incident, Naminé had been allowed to stay in school, but she was isolated from the rest of her classmates for it, and by extension Kairi was as well. The bullying was much more underhanded after that, and harrassment got so bad Naminé was convinced she just had to run away to get away from it all. Kairi, always by her side, left with her, and the two tried to make it out on their own in Death City.
• It wasn't long before they were found by Aqua, a high-class Meister. Aqua took them in without prejudice and heard out their story. She explained to them the truth about Naminé's "darkness"-- that it was actually insanity and madness. She was also able to tell Kairi about her special anti-insanity wavelength and how she could properly use it to help Naminé keep her insanity in check.
• Aqua became like a foster mother to both girls, and for one year she trained Kairi and Naminé, teaching them how to fight and defend themselves. In the midst of that training, she discovered Kairi and Naminé's potential as a Meister and Weapon respectively. By the end of a year's time, she had arranged (and paid) for them to go to Shibusen to hone their abilities.
• Now Kairi and Naminé are in their first year of NOT, fitting in well with the other students there-- though nobody knows about Naminé’s insanity yet. They are friends with their EAT senpai Maka Albarn.
Canon point is near the beginning of Arachnes threat and post the release of the kishin, Asura.
