Class Five - [This is a war]

[Sid was most definitely early today. His expression rather grim for once; this was a class not for joking around.

He waits patiently for the class to fill before he begins his lecture.]

[ For once, Heine is actually on time for this little gathering.

He has taken a spot at the back of the room, arms folded across his chest, head lowered and looking fairly volatile. He doesn't seem to have anything to offer yet or any questions to ask, but he is listening to ever damn word.]

[ He half glances over at the man lingering in his gerneral proximity, his eyes briefly scanning over him for the same reason he always glances at someone: to size him up. Heine didn't recognise him, even at a glance he was sure of that but he wasn't there to be social--he was rarely somewhere to be social--and so made no gesture to greet the guy nor to introduce himself. He lacked patience for casual nicities at the best of times, but in this situation his tolerance for platitudes were nonexistent. ]

[ Heine doesn't notice the words to begin with, but after a moment or two he does pick up on something. He turns his head a little toward the man sat at the desk, watching him closely. He's never heard the words before and while he isn't really one for poetry it does make him wonder why someone would begin to recite it on a whim like that... ]

[ Heine doesn't look away as the man staring back at him, though he does tilt his head and frowns. Clearly, he does not know what know what this guy is talking about.]

... Loveless?

[ "Pleasure"? That was an interesting way of phrasing it though Heine's expression doesn't actually change that much.]

Thought prophecies usually warned about bad shit going down.

[Kanda hasn't been attending classes, but he wants to know exactly what kind of "briefing" Shibusen is going to offer those who would accept one of its missions. For the time being, he figures that since he's signed no contract with them, hunting for this murderer isn't his business or his responsibility, but it certainly has caught his attention.

He's standing at the back of the room too, a few feet away from the white-haired man who lives across the hall from him (oh yes, he certainly recognizes you, Heine). His arms are likewise folded across his chest too, but his expression is aloof, like he really can't be bothered to give a damn about anyone involved in this mess.]

[ There was no way Heine was going to ignore someone stood that close to him but there was an additional thing he noticed about the person stop near him; he knew him. Well, he didn't know him know him, but he arguably knew more things about the guy than he did about most people. His name, for a start, though that had come from down the grapevine.

He slid his eyes toward the swordsman without turning his head fixing a hard stare on him. What was he even doing here? He didn't usually show up to these things, he certainly didn't look like he gave a damn... So why? Heine was on edge enough that even the questions that popped into his head that would normally come and go very quickly actually made his shoulders tense more, visibly so if the exorcist was watching closely enough. ]

[Kanda may not be watching that closely, his attention at least superficially focused on the front of the room, but he doesn't really need to look. He can feel the tension and hostility coming off of his pale neighbor in waves, and it prickles like heat up his spine, his own shoulders tensing in reflexive reply.

Turning his head slowly, he fixes Heine with an answering stare of his own, unimpressed and unyielding. His gut tells him that this has to do with more than just the fall-out from their brush in the hall when Kanda first arrived. Something is up, and even if he doesn't know what, he's keeping a watch on Heine now.]

[ For Heine, the second Kanda's eyes met his it is like the base of his own spine has been set alight. For some people that experience may have simply been a fleeting one of brief note before it is dismissed and forgotten.

Heine however is distinctly undecided about what he feels about that particular sensation.

On the one hand, there is always a strange excitement in that kind of tension; Heine thrives on that kind of energy and not in what everyone might consider a good way.

On the other hand, that feeling lingers like a burn on his skin and makes his whole vertebrate pulse beneath his skin all the way up to the back of his neck. It is not too often that he gets that kind of feeling at it is note-worthy.

He straightens his back slowly, bringing himself to his full height possibly for the first time in front of the young man staring at him. And not once down he break the eye contact, not even for a half-second. ]

[There's no way that Kanda can miss any of that, even if it had been ambiguous in message somehow (which it isn't). White-hair is trying to call him out, trying to mark his prominence, his turf, his status, and Kanda knows it. Straightening himself out like that--even without knowing a damn thing about Heine's past, Kanda can still read the gesture--it's the move of a dog raising its hackles in warning.

Kanda's sure as hell not going to leave that unchallenged, but he also knows that there are appropriate times and places, and that if he draws himself up and squares his shoulders now this is only going to escalate.

So he doesn't move or shift his stance, and he doesn't look away even for a second either. He figures that the message will be pretty damn clear.]

[ Despite the mood hanging in the air and in spite of his own discomforted feelings at that moment in general he can't help but smirk to himself at that reply, because as far as Heine is concerned that is a reply.

And Heine quite approves of that reply. He knew better than to start something then and there with matters as grave as they were, or at least he should know better. But at the same time he was pent up, angry and running on almost no sleep at all and he wanted, needed, something to let off steam in the interim.

But he shouldn't. He knows he has to at least try to keep his cool for Nill's sake, but at the same time he makes no effort to break the eye contact or to disguise the dangerous little smirk on his lips.]

[Kanda is used to speaking through body language. He's just not so used to it being heard anywhere near so clearly. He knows that, in general, people read him simply as grumpy, standoffish, belligerent, aloof. And for the most part, when they want to talk to him they do it by, well, talking (as though his body language isn't perfectly clear to begin with).

This is altogether different. This conversation is silent and mutual, and even though Kanda doesn't know who the hell this white-haired man is, he damn well recognizes the electric feeling in the atmosphere. It's the same feeling he got when they stood face-to-face in the hallway: the gathering pressure of an afternoon storm, laden and expectant, right before the cloudburst ( ... )
