[You know what Rei is really getting tired of?

People leaving. Yesterday was a pretty nice day, she'd finally gotten a decent night's sleep, and she'd woken up to find...well.]

Has anyone seen Cain Hargreaves?

A little less than a day. He was here yesterday, so he either...went missing last night or this morning.

I would wait for a few more days or so before writing him off as gone. We've seen an increase in cases wherein people are being returned and brought back in rapid succession.

[She nods, looking a little more relaxed]

At the risk of attributing some kind of sentience to the device, I believe that BREW may be tweaking the people it returns to a more optimum state for battle. I've observed that some come back with their abilities changed, or if nothing changed in terms of their abilities, it's their memories or general outlook, implying that they've spent some time in their own worlds and undergone life-changing experiences before getting sent back here.

[She pauses a moment, then grabs at her notebook to jot this down into her notes.]

Ah, that makes sense. It's a good theory, and so far from what I've seen and the accounts I've heard, there is nothing to refute it.

Although it's a little...worrying to hear that the device might know more than we think it does, that it can tell when to pull someone back after the experience...

It is merely a theory - there's nothing to refute it, yes, but there's nothing to say for certain that it's not wrong, as well. There's no proof that BREW is sentient. It could be operating under a programmed set of criterion, for all we know.
