[So much for a translation problem. Remembering her conversation with John, though, she's figuring out that you might be one of those 'countries' he was talking about.]
I am from a planet called Aiur. I cannot provide a map for you, but it was a world of vast jungles and many thriving provinces. Earth is unfamiliar to me, so I do not know the relevance of those that you pointed out.
That so? Ah, those I pointed out were my neighbors. Difficult to live with, but ya manage.
Jungles, huh. Is that what most of the world is covered in? My planet's mostly covered in water an' all, but the place I lived in is mostly dry an' ... well, it's a desert.
It is likely they are without number, Ottoman Empire. The humans where I am from have even colonized uninhabitable planets to collect their natural resources.
The human species is tenacious and resilient, and seems to lack self control. There is comfort in familiarity, but some things should change. You are... from a time before this place, then?
[She's quiet for a moment, considering. You're probably getting tired of this question by now!]
Forgive my skepticism, but I am still not certain how you are the Empire, rather than the ruler of said Empire. I can think of no comparison within my society.
's fine. Probably my fault, in part, for not explainin' these things.
Ah, let's see ... [pause] in my world, we are born, see? An' by 'we' I mean countries, the land, the empire. An' we're both the land and a person -- we just are, we don't know how or why. That's just how it is.
So a country like me grows an' becomes ambitious an' decides to be an empire. An' there I was, brash little kid, conquerin' nations left an' right 'till I get to be the size ya see on the map I posted.
But at the same time, I don't rule. I'm only as good as the people who make up the land, see? I'm more like ... their soul, their resolve, somethin' like that. Not the same as the way souls work here, but a soul in the same definition of an 'essence' or somethin' in that I'm the physical, human manifestation of it. [laughs wistfully] Each country's like that. So an empire is made up of nations who have their own human forms, an' nations who are made up of souls. In a way my burden's heavier since I got a lot of heads to account for, but then again, nobody
( ... )
I believe I understand now, at least moreso than before. The concept is still alien to me.
It is, I think, somewhat close to the Khala of my people. Within it, we are of one voice and one mind, and many things we experience together. That is the extent of the comparison I can make, however.
Thank you for your explanation, Ottoman Empire. [Humans are still pretty weird, though.]
Yer welcome. I don't mind talkin' about us! An' yeah, that sounds real similar to us countries, 'xcept that sometimes our people don't even know we exist.
So the experience is more one-sided than anythin' else. We do the feelin' an' the carryin' of the weight of their decisions emotionally an' spiritually an' it can either make a country or break an empire.

It is. [A pause.] It was. I, too, lived in a desert before coming here, but it was another planet.

That's more than a lifetime, I think.
