I... haven't found mine yet--I don't know if I have abilities, for that matter--so I can't say how it works for weapons, but for meisters, their abilities would more likely be related to what their original powers were before coming here.

Regardless, danger is the best trigger in this place that can actually teach brats like you. Meditating can only get you so far when you're trying to live, and this place is hell-bent on making everything a 'technicality'.
