I agree. Something too dressy would be hard to move around in, as well as looking overly... authoritative. [See, he's learned a few things from talking with Anders!]

Perhaps a dressed down version of what this world's guar- police wear? Something clean pressed in a solid simple color plus some sort of easily recognizable decoration: like bars or a badge.

I doubt I could make any of them put more than a coat on, and it'll have to look good. Decoration, though...

Well, I think a jacket could work. Like those... how is this worded again...? Oh! Sports movies, letter jackets! Make it more like a team reward then a mandate.
