New arrivals are starting to get boring.

[Curled up on her couch, Lili yawns. She just got home from work, evidently, as she's still wearing the frilly maid costume from the cafe. Her words are harsh, but she looks cheerful, all the same.]It used to be fun, trying to see how quickly I could scope out the interesting ones from the rest. But it's ( Read more... )

[Responding, perhaps against his better judgement. But.]

You must have been here a long time.

[He doesn't think this place could ever be entirely boring, even based only on what he's seen so far.

Then again, maybe it's not as completely novel to everyone else.]

I wonder... how you would classify yourself?

I've been here for about three months. Not too long, compared with some others.

My first day here I fought until my face was nearly rearranged. I think that qualifies as 'none of the above'.

[He hasn't met anyone yet who's been here more than a few months that he knows of -- that's a little heartening. Maybe.]

... Is fighting not what is expected of us?

[All the polite curiosity.]

I wasn't playing with Kishin.

[Not the enemy, and clearly not a regular spar. Then...]

A street brawl, I take it?

If you have to put it like that, you can. But it was better than that.

[Headtilt.]

Then, it was a proper duel?

[He's seen all kinds of things happen in streets... in front of bars.....]

Closer to a brawl than a duel. But it was too perfect to have its own word.

[Goodness, another someone who waxes poetic about punching people's lights out, or however it went. Maybe he should be more wary, but the truth is Allen just feels like shaking his head a little.]

Then, you are simply looking for opponents, aren't you?

That's not the only thing I'm looking for, but it's definitely a favorite.

I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you in that respect.

[Not that he's opposed to a good throwdown, but brawling for no reason is for drunkards and those with nothing better to do.]

But it must be a pretty dull war, if you have that much free time.

Oh, I'm not participating in their war.

If it's all right, may I ask why?

[It seems like a war would be the ideal way to get one's fill of fights -- he's pretty sure there are a few mercenaries out there who enjoy the rush more than they enjoy the money.]

I don't feel like lending my support to a system I don't agree with.

[Well, she was ragging on people for being sheep. So, maybe this makes sense after all.]

I'm sorry -- I still don't know very much about this world, so I'll have to ask you to explain what it is you don't agree with.

I don't like how they try to say our being here isn't truly their fault, but they provide us with everything we need as though they feel guilty. I don't like how they expect us to be grateful for everything they've done for us, even though we wouldn't have needed it if we were in our proper homes to begin with. I don't like the way they put strangers from other worlds into positions of power, when the situation makes it impossible to prove that they are trustworthy, or even qualified, and doesn't even ask for their names in return. I don't like how Spirit Albarn thinks he can tell you what to do, or the way his daughter talks down to you like you're an infant if you have the nerve to tell her no ( ... )
