Poll

I have created a short poll to get a general idea of what makes a reader happy. The more people voting, the better, so have it at it!

Edit: I'm finding that a few important answers were left off the poll, and I'm not able to edit the poll at this point.  If you have an answer that doesn't appear on the poll, please post it in a comment, and the ' ( Read more... )

I clicked "always" for reviewing because it is very, very, very rare for me not to review a story I have read. I only don't review if I thought the story was absolutely dreadfully written (which almost never happens on the moderated archives) or it made me ill in some way (generally, I avoid fics that might make me feel ill, so the question doesn't arise! LOL!), but I don't like giving a negative review based solely on my own taste in fics. There are likely a lot of people who would like a fic that I don't. Now if someone writes something that I think borders on the criminal -- rapefics that glorify rape or fics that depict sexually explicit acts between adults and minors or that use child abuse to titillate -- I would feel free to leave a negative review ( ... )

Ah, well I fall into that odd category. My account on Ashwinder was zeroed out when they moved to the all-on-one-page Sycophant Hex site and zeroed again when they moved back. I've been a member for ages but show very few reviews made. The same thing happened when OWL stopped taking Yahoo accounts. I missed the deadline and although they reinstated my account immediately with gmail, it had already been wiped. I could replace my favorites on both archives, but not the review counts. I also review wherever I land, so that may be LJ, FFN, Ashwinder, PP, OWL, Digital Quill, etc. So I look bad at some archives, unless you look for me on the SSHG Exchange where I comment on everything like a madwoman.

Well, you are definitely forgiven then. At least you have a good excuse for a low number, whereas people like me... *cough*

I was thinking about several folks I've noticed over at TPP. I imagine that all my reviews have been "lost" on SH, too, although since I was reading over there under another penname, I've never really looked to notice since they switched back from Mage.

Anyway, I imagine that there are some people where it shows zero reviews and hundreds of favorites because people might use different accounts for different things or something, but I do think that there are people who never review and it would be interesting to know why. (As opposed to occasional reviewers, which I actually think is just fine -- I'd have someone express genuine enjoyment of a chapter every few -- or several -- chapters -- than have them feel obligated to say something when they aren't moved to or are sick, exhausted, or whatever.)

I have seen quite a few of those as well. People who seem to have every story and author at the archive favorited, but have left a total of 10 reviews...

I have a few who have faved me (which is nice) whose profiles show literally zero reviews and hundreds of faves. (They must spend a lot of time reading!) At least I know that I'm in good company! haha! It just always strikes me as odd. But then, I tend to be a bit of a blatherer . . . ;-P

*nods* That would be a good thing to find out. I can't speak for everyone, but I'm guilty when it comes to reviewing; I only review about half the time. This is usually simply because I forget to. A terrible excuse, I know, but I wonder if it's the same for everyone else or if there are more reasons...

I'll admit I almost never review. The biggest reason is that I don't usually read something when I find it, but save it on my HD to look over the next couple of months. It would be quite a hassle to track all those stories down to reveiw. Another reason is that I'm practically mute in RL, and the not-talking habit has carried over onto the internet. Ocassionally (like today) I'm talkative so I'll reveiw everying I read, but I really think commenting is like having a conversation- some people like a spout out everthing that comes to mind, and some people like to stand back nodding their agreement.
