A soundtrack to a workday.

I have been working like a madman lately. It's not the most stimulating work, but whatever. It's just what I need. By tomorrow night, I'll have worked five shifts in a row. That's 2 a day plus Friday night. Last night was grand, there were a few local celebs, and we did so well I got an extra $20 just for leading people to their seats.

Heard a cool knock knock joke the other day, courtesy of a co-worker's 6 yr old kid. It was a little more charming with his southern accent, but you'll get it. *ahem*

Kid: Knock Knock...
Me: Who's there?
Kid: I eat mop!
Me: ...I eat mop who?
Kid: *chortles*
Me: *impressed*

It never fails. Every morning, I see someone come downstairs to the lobby with no shoes or socks on, like this is their living room. Then they mosey around the restaurant asking where the coffee is. Gross. I don't have a problem with feet, I'm not one of those. In fact, thanks to some Corbin Fisher / Tarantino brainwashing, I think they can be pretty sexy. But people, get a clue. That is not sanitary for you or anyone who comes after you. Wear shoes in public places. Especially restaurants.

So I've been working here long enough to get pretty familiarized with the music they play over the loudspeakers in the lobby every day. Over all, it's decent. Inoffensive mid-tempo junk you'd expect from a hotel. And thankfully the playlist is set to shuffle. This is great for obvious reasons But there are some songs that i hear too often no matter seldom they're played. And these songs have me ready to tear my hair out. Here's a list of the worst offenders! (I made no attempt to research the actual titles of any of these. Correct me if you feel like it, I don't care.)

  • That Freshmen song, by the Verve, I think. This is one of the most overrated songs of all time and I didn't see its appeal in the 90s either.

  • I Need to Know, by Marc Antony. I'm on the fence about this one. It's dreadful, but a least it reminds me of a really good bit on American Dad.

  • There are multiple Nickelback ballads. I don't think I need to list any of them.

  • The Way You Make Me Feel - Michael Jackson. It's uptempo, relatively, but this is one of my least favorite MJ tracks, solely because it's not as fun as any of his other hits.

  • Three different songs by John Mayer. Daughters especially. Just disappear you poop-fiend.

  • The Space Between (maybe?) - Dave Matthews. Idunno. This guy gets a lot of love. He thinks he's awesome, but he is sooo Dave Matthews.

  • Underneath It All - No Doubt. I bet a lot of you like this song. It's not awful, I'll give you that. But it IS one of my least favorite singles by a band I actually really love, and I have no desire to hear it every day. Nuff said.

  • Beautiful - James Blunt. This song doesn't make sense at all and it bums everyone out. Why is it still around?

  • Calling All Angels - someone, Idunno. This is one of those songs that makes me wonder, "Who was this for?"

That was all pretty negative huh? Just to add some balance, here's a list of songs I like and am not tired of hearing every day yet.

  • Breathe - Anna Nalick. She was a 1-hit wonder, and a lot of people can't even stand this song of hers. I like the gloomy and fatalistic way she talks about life. So there.

  • Closing Time - Semisonic. A classic. And makes me feel like I get to leave soon.

  • Still/(steal?) My Sunshine - ???. I don't know anything about this track, but I used to hear it on the radio some times.

  • I want you - Savage Garden. Awesome. I remember elementary school. Still don't have a fucking clue about 90% of the lyrics.

  • That Five for Fighting song about being more than a bunch of things he lists. This makes me think of that one episode of Drawn Together where Captain Hero is having sad times. Love it. "What would Five for Fighting do?!"

  • Mercy - Duffy. This is just obviously a very cool song.

  • All You Wanted - Michelle Branch. Good tune. Element of Nostalgia. Makes me feel like Simon is around. In a not creepy way.

  • Shit on the Radio - Nelly Furtado. I unapologetically love this bitch. Especially her old stuff, before she went hip-hop. But it's all good.

  • Miss Independent - Kelly Clarkson. I feel like there was some political reason I'm supposed to be mad at her. But fuck it, she's fun. And I get to feel sassy for 3 minutes. And she likes Amy Lee, which speaks very highly of her. Yes it does, shut up!

  • 6th Avenue Heartache - The Wallflowers. Yeah, that other song you might have heard by them. It's pretty good.

  • That Black Horse/Cherry Tree song - KT something. I never downloaded this one, but have always enjoyed it when it crosses my path. No signs of stopping any time soon.

  • Shadow of the Day - Linkin Park. I was super surprised this was on the playlist. It is definitely the black sheep. But I'll take it. These guys will always have a place in some angst-ridden corner of my heart. Especially when they forget to rap.
