one. Armstrong remembers the day when he first met Roy Mustang, the young fighter who came to Ishval with him and the rest of the squad in order to join the efforts of the fight. By then he was already broken, not sure how much longer he can take this slaughter without feeling as if he's throwing away something important inside himself.

But yet when the young man takes the reins and has to lead the platoon he's in, Armstrong only obeys without question. Its only after he's out of that platoon then does he finally get out of the campaign.

two. The next time he meets Roy Mustang, the fighter is now a veteran and goes through each day as if he's already dead. He can see the haunting in his eyes, the spectres of the dead floating in his mind's eye. Armstrong sees a man beaten and broken before belief as he stands before the freshly-promoted Colonel, standing straight and a salute at the ready.

"Major Alex Louis Armstrong from Central, reporting here for duty!"

Roy makes a nod, only giving his file a cursory glance before placing it aside. "You understand that by working with me, you're not allow to go back the other way should you wish to. Are you still prepared to continue with my goal?"

Without hesitation, Armstrong replies with an affirmative. This was what he had chosen, and unlike Ishval he would stick with this no matter what.

three. "Why did you take them in?"

Roy looked up from his papers at that, one raised eyebrow directed at Armstrong. "Are you questioning me, Major?"

The man shook his head. "I do not dobut you, sir; but I wanted to know the reason."

"There was nothing much, really. I gave him a choice, and he accepted it." Roy made a shrug, tossing his half-done papers onto the desk. "Nothing more and nothing less."

Armstrong knows, of course, that that is a lie; everything that Roy Mustang does has a reason behind it, and there is certainly more than meets the eye for this. But Armstrong knows that the Colonel will tell him when it is necessary in time, and so he merely nods and responds with a simple. "I understand, sir."

four. In that car once more, Roy asked him again if Armstrong was going to continue to stand by him no matter what, even if it meant facing the homunculus, facing the government, facing all of Amesteris.

Armstrong only replied with a yes, and swore that he would never run away again.

five. The Colonel was blinded, tired and exhausted after everything - but still he ordered, and still he made sure that command was in the area. Father had finally been destroyed, but everything else had just begun. The end was only the beginning, many had said before.

Once his orders were given Armstrong obeyed without question, and immediately headed off to do what he was told.

plus one. It was alarming, seeing this other version of Roy in Death City, but still Armstrong could do nothing else but hope. He helped the best he could, and gave his all still in order to serve the man he respected so much despite the situation. He told himself that he was still Roy Mustang all the same, and so he would help him all the same no matter what.

But still some times, when he sees the man light up a cigarette or when he looks at that eyepatch over his face, Armstrong asks himself if this is the right thing to do for them all in the end.
