[ France is sitting in a judge's seat, already judging before he's even tasted it. You better not expect him to go easy on you!

But he comes from a time where bribery is okay so feel free to try. I mean say hello.

He is tapping his fingers against the table, waiting for the first pie. ]

Monsieur Francis! I didn't know you were going to be a judge! [She's honestly pleased to see Francis. It doesn't even occur to her to do this to bribe France.]

Good afternoon, Mademoiselle Hargreaves. Of course, my cooking is the best! It only makes sense that I am a judge.

I would love to try some sometimes! Uncle says that I really shouldn't cook, as it is not something a girl of my status has need for. It can be quite fun to bake sometimes though!

I am sure he's quite right! [ being from a time when that was true of noble ladies at least ] But once in a while will certainly not harm you any. I can teach you to bake something when I tutor you sometime, yes?

I have been doing quite a bit of my own cooking though, since Riff isn't around anymore. I am glad that I learned some years ago, or I would be lost now.

Ah, yes, you came here alone? That is a shame. But we can learn something new together next time! Since I have not yet perfected the use of all those appliances.

[A touch of sadness broke through, but she quickly managed to cover it again,] Oh, I was not here when I first came, but then I went back home for a short time. When I came back, it seems that several months had passed here, and both my brother Cain, and his manservant Riff had returned home.

[Francis didn't need to know that they were both dead back home.]

[ He nods, somewhat knowingly. ] I have apparently been here as well. But I was old, and I can't remember it! I am sorry you are not able to be here with your brother, however.

[ he would be sorry they were dead too ... in that way that someone like him can be sorry about something he's so very familiar with. ]

[She gave him a small, sad smile.] It is all right. I was living on my own for a while some time ago, and I learned how to take care of myself, so it's not really so bad.
