As it were, Vergil had been on edge ever since parting with Yuna shortly after midnight. His nerves had eased somewhat after the Madness Wavelength receded but once the sun had risen he'd grown concerned again about her safety. He'd assisted with clean-up and the removal of the night's casualties, foregoing sleep, but it wasn't until the afternoon that he had checked at the home and then contacted the girl.
Knowing she was alive had only barely placated him. He couldn't even begin to relax until he'd seen her. Even having done so, seeing that harm had befallen her... still he'd remained awake and stayed by her bedside while she rested. It wasn't logically sound or even really practical, but his mind hadn't allowed him to sleep, nor could he shake off the intense desire to keep watch over her. Like she could somehow be in danger whilst surrounded by people in the clinic.
Vergil had allowed himself to rest his eyes while Yuna slept, but he remained beyond true somnolence, his other senses attuned. At the subtle sound of her rousing he opened one eye in a blink from where he sat in his chair, leaning forward with one hand framing his face, the other resting next to one leg with sheathed katana in hand, as always.
He waited a few moments longer, giving her the opportunity to slip back into slumber if she so chose before murmuring the quiet greeting, "Morning." Part humour, but for all his distorted sense of time what with being awake for so long, the only indication that it wasn't was that the sun was descending instead of rising.
It took Yuna a moment to actually gather up her senses and remember that she wasn't at home. The room was darker than she had expected, and so while opening her eyes hadn't been difficult due to a lack of bright light in the room, having her vision adjust to the darkness took a moment.
"Oh," she said quietly, mostly to herself, as she realized where she was. The clinic was crowded, but with much of the residents resting or sleeping entirely, it was still relatively quiet. Blinking away some of her fatigue, Yuna glanced over at her visitor, taking in his form with a tired and somewhat pained gaze. "Morning?"
Oh right, he'd been here when she'd fallen asleep. Was it really morning? She barely remembered that part where she'd fallen unconscious, and she was secretly surprised to see him still here. Had he even slept yet?
"Why are you still here?" she asked as she tried to push herself into a seated position with one hand. The other was currently useless, held in a sling against her abdomen.
He found himself having to check, as it were. Vergil's gaze raised to a clock high on the wall on the other side of the room before he shook his head faintly. "It's just after six p.m.," he corrected. What an inconvenient time to wake up. Then again, given Yuna was injured, she'd probably have no trouble sleeping again when she felt like it.
"Not like there's anything else to do, and I don't feel like sleeping," he said as nonchalantly as possible. Right. Frankly sleep would be fantastic. He just found he couldn't. Or wouldn't. It was hard to tell, since it seemed like mind and emotions had taken to rebelling against him since the day before. All he knew is he couldn't remember hearing a break in her steady breathing in the past few hours.
"Unless that's a problem." It was becoming rapidly reminiscent of another scenario from a month before, only this time Yuna was the injured one, even if Vergil was still exhausted. This time around he'd walked away barely harmed at all, fortunately.
"Six..." Oh. So it was nearly evening, not morning. Given that she hadn't gotten to the clinic until the late hours of the morning, that made sense, but it still made her head a little fuzzy. The amount of light coming in the windows was what she was used to when she woke in the morning, but it was dawn then, not sunset.
"Don't feel like it?" She was asking stupid questions, but her mind was fuzzy as she dragged herself into wakefulness. Still, his answer didn't make sense anyway.
"No, it's fine. I'm glad you're here." The words came out before her brain had thought to stop them. "But, you have to be tired. You haven't slept at all since before training yesterday?" Yuna always worried when Vergil didn't get enough sleep.
He shook his head again, but he gave Yuna a considerate look. She was just waking up, and she was injured. Head injury, no less, so there was no sense in nitpicking. Quite frankly he wasn't going to argue if it meant evading the question. It was something he wasn't sure he could answer - especially not while seeing her like this.
Vergil couldn't help but feel a little warmed by her admission, though.
"Mmn, I'm fine," he insisted, knowing full well how the conversation was going to turn, as it always did when she started fussing over him. He wasn't the one that needed fussing over at that moment. "Are you?" he asked, both genuinely and to forestall that line of thought. Both hers and his, that is.
All he knew was that he had a sudden and profound urge to reach out and touch her temple. He didn't, but it made him frown slightly to himself. Her head was bandaged, after all, and... well.
Yuna tilted her bandaged head to the side for a moment, regarding his expression carefully before she nodded slowly. The utter fatigue that he'd carried the night she'd had to take him home was absent for now. He simply looked, well, tired. Perhaps not all of that was physical, either. She'd let him be, for now, on that subject.
"I'm okay," she said. "Well, I guess I've been better, right?" Yuna managed to muster up a smile, trying to make a joke at her own expense. "But I'll be fine. I could have been worse." Always trying to make like of the situation, as usual.
She caught that frown though, and she wondered where it had come from. Had she said something to bother him? "What's wrong, Vergil? Did someone get hurt?"
He nodded. "Right. Plenty of people weren't so lucky," he replied. Given the amount of time he'd spent clearing the streets, all of the Guests were lucky. Not that that alleviated his concerns for Yuna's injuries. Funny, how he could completely disregard his own but treat hers with utmost importance.
At the question, though, Vergil blinked at her and stared blankly before answering with over-abundant honesty, "Clearly, yes. And I'd be lying if I said that doesn't concern me." Seriously. He didn't blame her, especially without knowing the details, but he stifled a little at the protective sentiment of his.
He shifted in his seat and lifted his head from his hand to look at her attentively, then. "What happened to you?" he asked. Making her talk when she was recovering felt a touch inconsiderate, but his mind felt less fuzzier that way.
Yuna frowned a bit. Perhaps joking wasn't the best course of action, given the situation, but he seemed so...serious. No, that wasn't the right term. Intense would have been a better one. She had simply wanted to lighten the mood a little bit, but it seemed that Vergil was a bit more affected by this than she'd thought.
She looked confused for a moment before her mind clicked it into place. Oh. Right. Of course. Her face grew warm from embarrassment; really, she should have seen that coming at least a little bit. "But I'm fine. Really."
At his question, Yuna pressed her lips together a little nervously. "Well, I spent most of the beginning of the attack trying to get some of the guests and the regular residents to safety. I was doing that when one of the...other guests attacked me from out of nowhere."
Vergil gave Yuna a long, assessing look, almost as if he were probing for the full truth. It was difficult to think of someone in bandages as fine, this girl especially. Eventually though, he repeated the words aloud, "You're fine," but mostly for his benefit. He could allow himself to be a little more at ease with that assurance.
Only a little, though. His mind couldn't help but cast back to the night before. During Halloween he'd had that moment of dawning suspicion regarding Yuna's feelings and resolved to address them with her. And then hell had broken loose, and now finally... he was looking at her, fears and reservations reawoken. The same she'd borne witness to a month ago, even if back then she hadn't truly understood them.
Nonetheless, the sudden urge returned and was finally heeded as he reached out and touched just beyond the bandages at her head, feather-softly. "And how did you get this?" he asked curiously. Being taken unawares before she could call Yuuri was a real vulnerability, but failing to guard her head was a little careless.
"Mhmm." Yuna nodded slowly. In her mind, she was fine, since she hadn't obtained any lasting injuries. Sure, she hurt now, but she was alive and intact, and he friends were safe. Even if she wasn't feeling her best now, she would be good again soon.
Her mismatched eyes flicked upward as he reached out to her, hit fingertips lightly touching the bandages on her head. She returned her gaze to his face moments later, looking sheepish again. Yuna didn't move away though; if anything, she turned toward the contact unconsciously.
"Well, the young man who attacked me, he had one of those tails," she explained, assuming he'd seen at least one of them. "The ones with the arrows. It missed me, but shattered the brick wall behind me. One of the larger pieces hit me from the side."
"Ah," he murmured, giving a look of comprehension before carefully removing his hand a moment later. Normally reserved about physical contact as is - though oddly not so much with Yuna recently - he can't help but be reluctant. As it remains, he already dreads having to take her home purely due to transit. The girl is injured after all, and can't help but think of her as fragile.
"Right." He nodded. He'd had to help deal with one of the infected. Looking thoughtful, he mused aloud, "Through collateral damage? That's... actually fairly smart." Concern or not, trust Vergil to look at the matter from a tactical point of view. Given his emphasis on precision, it's not something he would have thought to do. Convenient way to attack from the blind spot.
Then again, she had allowed herself to be backed against a wall then, evidently. He briefly considered mentioning something to that effect, but soon thought better of it. She'd probably learned her lesson. And, if not... well. It could wait until they were back at training. While she was laid up in a bed in the clinic was not the most considerate of times.
"I suppose so, though I'm not sure how deliberate it was," she said, seeming to contemplate it as well.
Yuna looked incredibly sheepish then as she admitted to the next portion of the story. "After that, he ran away and I...kind of fell asleep for a little bit. I must have hurt my arm when I hit the ground." Falling asleep isn't entirely accurate; she had more passed out than anything else.
"It'll heal just fine, though. They said that as long as I come back for treatments here and there, it'll be good as new in no time." Yuna smiled then, mostly for his benefit.
