Christmas Eve-Eve post

Okay, so, in keeping with the rest of my year it's not the most all-singing-all-dancing Christmas of my life, but that said it probably isn't for most people either- contrary to what certain movies my imply, actual white Christmases in England spell everyone having a pretty damn quiet Christmas because everyone is scared to go anywhere.

Oh, this weather- as you probably could guess- is not 'severe' by any sensible standards- it's only severe in that it always takes the British transport infrastructure completely by surprise that it should snow in winter and that snow might be a little difficult to drive on. Also, the cold spell has gone on for a long time, which may be why Brother so far having a very quiet holiday- all his friends have man-flu. (He has the milder form, student flu- he's too sick to help me clean the house, but miraculously recovers half an hour before he's due to go to the pub. You know how it goes...)

The cake design is from goodfood magazine (http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/889664/rocky-robin-cake)- it's not quite as easy as those pictures make it look, at least not if you add liquid dye (the amount you have to add to get a proper red rather than a coral-colour, and if you have to mix red and green for the brown (which seems to have not occurred to anyone who commented- is this only because I was raised by an art teacher?) makes it very wet and sticky and as such inclined to turn to mush that won't go into any particular shape (also, when you're mixing them, both look kind of obscene))- but for someone making their first ever attempt at decorative icing (well, bar some Christmas biscuits last year- cue several aged relatives holding up deformed reindeer, wonky trees and unrecognisable Santas: "Oh, it's lovely, dear! What is it?") it's a pretty nifty design.
