The Other Two Things About Small William
(Because I'd written 12 about his mother, but I only thought of these two afterwards)
11. Calls all unknown adults ‘Captain’, until he’s had evidence otherwise. Just to be on the safe side.
12. Has a pet cat, who as a kitten which came aboard at Cape Town, and was found in the galley after they had sailed. His mother wasn’t pleased, but when he brought it to show her she agreed that it was indeed an uncommonly fine cat, and it could live aboard, but not sleep in the great cabin. William’s cat is white and slightly fluffy, with green eyes, but resolutely not a cute cat- it’s now about eighteen inches long and about fourteen pounds of sleek muscle; it also clearly knows who the pirate king is, and sees fit to line up scores of saggy-necked rats as a tribute to her. William has recently raised a protest at his mother’s yelling and cursing at the his pet when coming out of her cabin and stumbling over a rodent about the size and limpness of a draft excluder- after all, the cat is only doing its job with tremendous devotion to duty.
At Uncle Jack’s suggestion, the cat is called James.
