Hugo knelt beside Luc's pallet; the skin was too white against the burlap covering. His chest barely rose and fell as he breathed, it was a body, but maybe nothing more.

"This isn't... this isn't any way for a warrior to die. I didn't want you to die." Hugo spoke softly, almost a whisper. The sound of metal against leather, and his curved blade was drawn, and he looked down at it thoughtfully, sadly.

"You should do it." It was a rough, ragged sound, so quiet that Hugo hadn't been sure he had heard anything, and he looked over and saw movement. Eyes barely open, but he could feel them watching. "...wouldn't it be easier for everyone. If you did."

The fire flared inside Hugo for a moment, as he brought the knife down into the straw of the pallet, barely missing the tips of Luc's fingers. "I didn't bring you out of there just to kill you; it was only the last resort if you never woke up. Don't you get it?" His voice was harsh, harsher than he had intended.

Luc brought his Runed hand up to feel the stitches and scarring on his abdomen, wincing lightly as his fingers touched. He laughed a little, thought it came out little more than a cough. "Is this your justice? Where do I beg for mercy, Flame Champion?" Another cough. "I couldn't change fate." He turned his face away. "Why should you?"

"Luc!" No reaction. "Luc! Listen to me!" Luc defiantly kept his gaze on the wall, and he was jolted into surprise when he felt Hugo on his legs, his hands on his shoulders, forcing him to look up into the boy's dark eyes. "You were just doing what you thought was best. I can't say I agree with it, but I believe the Spirits, I believe Aila! I'm trying to help you."

Luc's voice was raspy as he laughed again, and sighed. "You hero types are always too willing to take on the hopeless cases."
