PHYS441: Scientific Ethics with Professor McKay

Jan 19, 2015 14:12

I'm going to try posting occasionally this year about some of some of the fanworks that have stuck with me, and it seems like the first one is the best place to start.

According to my calendar, the semester that begins tomorrow at my "flyspeck university" is the one in which Rodney McKay will be teaching Scientific Ethics in the timeline for "Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left to Lose" by
synecdochic, a gorgeous story (that I know everyone has read) which was posted back in March 2006.

This story was the first fic to ever make me cry, and the first one that I turned around and re-read immediately after finishing it. I found it about three months after discovering online fic, completely by chance, since up to that point I didn't even know LiveJournal existed. It was the fic that made me realize the possibilities present in fic, and touched off a habit that persists to this day.

It's been almost a decade, and Freedom still holds a special place in my heart, even though I've read thousands of pages (and probably millions of words) of fic since then. I still remember something the author said about Rodney (citation needed), and I think it's part of why Freedom's stuck with me: that this version of McKay isn't necessarily the one she sees taking shape in canon, but that it's possibly the best version of himself he could become. Since this only comes about in Rodney through being put through the forging process of Atlantis and what came after, I try to keep in mind when the going gets tough that if I keep walking through my own version of hell, that perhaps someday I will become the best version of myself I can be.
