Inspired by
synecdochic talking about Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab scents in her journal, I ordered a handful of imps (samples) a couple months ago. Here are my thoughts on the first few. Please be aware that I know not a single thing about perfume other than what I've picked up reading reviews lately.
Embalming Fluid: A light, pure scent: white musk, green tea, aloe and lemon.
I really like this one. It smells clean to me, which is probably the green tea and lemon. It doesn't have much throw, however. I put it on before bed the other night, and even lying there warm and toasty in bed I had to raise my wrist to my face to smell it. Going on the Maybe list to buy.
Villain: A classic Victorian men’s cologne: a lavender fougere, with hints of lilac, lime, and citrus musk.
I like the way this one smelled when I first put it on, but when I asked soneone for an opinion a couple hours later she leaned in and said, "Ooh, you smell like babies!" Mind, she's a neonatal nurse who loves babies, but that's not really what I was going for. I think I'll try it again, so it's not on the Hell No list, but not likely one I'll decide to buy in full size.
Miskatonic University: A venerable New England university, whose vast library holds many rare, diabolical and obscure arcane works, including one of the few surviving legitimate copies of the Necronomicon...The scent of Irish coffee, dusty tomes and polished oakwood halls.
I really, really wanted to love this one, since I spend most of my working life in a university library, but alas it isn't to be. In the imp I got the Irish coffee very strongly, but on my skin? It smelled rather like I'd spilled a tub of movie popcorn in my lap. I could only stand it for about ten minutes then had to go scrub it off. Definitely in the Hell No bin for me.
