A slight aquaintance from another department noticed that I didn't have my usual salad for lunch yesterday and made a point to ask me the reason today, in front of several of her co-workers. (I've lost weight since I've worked here and people, including this group, sometimes comment on that. I try to just say thanks and move on, don't encourage chitchat about it.)
I laughed off her question and didn't feel compelled to go into any great detail, or for that matter to explain to them why I was eating a piece of (belated, but yummy) King Cake along with today's salad. But geez, something about this was oddly intrusive.
It would be fine if the folks with whom I usually work/eat lunch comment on a departure from my regular routine. It would just be conversation, but none of them would care, and certainly wouldn't remember it the next day. Heck, I don't even know this woman's name and it is an entire 24 hours later. Why would she care, remember, comment, or question me? Humph.
Then I went outside for my usual quick airing. One of the two guys (relatively new hires I haven't met) who were outside smoking said that he noticed C (who wasn't with me today) and I go out every day but never come back in that same door so he wondered where he went. I explained that we just took the scenic route around the building to the main entrance for a quick stroll. Told them they could join us any time :-)
