Just some tidbits my English teacher passed on from our studies of Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Far from the Madding Crowd (my favourite), and Wide Sargasso Sea. I thought they would be handy for anyone interested in the Victorian Era a.k.a. Sherlock Holmes fanfiction-ers. :) I am by no means an expert, but sharing is caring!
Excellent overview of the era - particularly the salaries of the different classes and occupations. Doctor Watson would have made 25 pounds as a soldier and anything from 300-800 pounds as a doctor. ANNUALLY. Look to the bottom on a snippet about homosexuality.
A university student essay on why Jane Eyre was so controversial for it's time. Short, but interesting look at the social values of women, and governesses. Probably best for research on Mary Morstan.
Oh, and here's a great quote from Jane Eyre:
"Women are supposed to be very calm generally; but women feel just as men feel; they need exercise for their faculties and a field for their efforts as much as their brothers do; they suffer from too rigid a restraint, too absolute a stagnation, precisely as men would suffer; and it is narrow-minded in their more privileged fellow-creatures to say that they ought to confine themselves to making puddings and knitting stockings, to playing on the piano and embroidering bags. It is thoughtless to condemn them, or laugh at them, if they seek to do more or learn more than custom has pronounced necessary for their sex." Chapter 12.

Utah University - Novel Links - Not sure how good this is, but it is exactly what it says on the tin. Contains information on Emma, Jane Eyre, Middlemarch, Our Mutual Friend, Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Tess of the D'Ubervilles, Vanity Fair, and Woman in White. I haven't read all of these novels. Tenant was written by Anne Brönte and Tess was written by Thomas Hardy, who also wrote Far from the Madding Crowd.
Enchanted Serenity of Period Films is a blogspot based blog detailing reviews on any and all period films (current and older), plus photos, links, and other things. The "Just for Fun" section is wonderful, as is the "Fashion" section.
Austenbook - not the most academically informative, but very, very cute and funny. Actually a really good overview of what happens.
