Wow, okay, so Rick and I have totally opposing views on the current situation in Iraq right now.
I just read all about the looting of the Iraqi museum and am very saddened and feel horrible at the nation's loss of so much history. Let me paste a quote from the New York Times: Mr. Muhammad, the archaeologist, directed much of his anger at President Bush. "A country's identity, its value and civilization resides in its history," he said. "If a country's civilization is looted, as ours has been here, its history ends. Please tell this to President Bush. Please remind him that he promised to liberate the Iraqi people, but that this is not a liberation, this is a humiliation."
I completely agree with this quote. Where are we, after we've corrupted the city, to put it back under control? We can't drop bombs and say "clean up your own mess". We told these people we would free them, but there is no freedom in chaos. What we should be doing is establishing a new form of order, one that they can run themselves, but order none the less. I know that if bombs were dropped on Rochester and no one was in control of the city, not only would we have the destruction left by the bombs, but there would be plenty of Rochesterian destruction- from selfish people or people who didn't care. I don't know if I would ever stop crying. People need to be under some sort of order so that society functions properly .... we have not kept that part of our bargain and now Iraq is in more desolation than I imagined ....
We should clean up the mess that we made. I'm not certain why we made it in the first place, but we need to clean it up. And now.
I'm so sad that break is over, I don't want to go to classes tomorrow. I have too much work to be done this week. Arg.
I wrote a letter to Professor Matthew Brown at Eastman about the summer class. I'm going to put it in the mail tomorrow. We'll see what the response is.
Time for bed.
Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.
