Oh, the weather outside is frightful . . .

If only it were just the weather.

Farmer's Almanac has predicted a harsh winter, but the editors don't know how right they are when it comes to Cougar Ridge, Colorado.

Subzero temperatures, blizzards, and avalanches aren't the only hazards the people of Cougar Ridge will have to contend with as they try to make it through another winter.

A stranger came to town, prophesying a showdown between "The One and The Thousand," but before anyone could find out who those two people are, he disappeared. Two days later, a well-known and -liked schoolteacher was murdered. The police are baffled. Is this linked to the murders committed by David Pitt? He's been killed, but there are plenty of people who believe he wasn't working alone. Or is this some new threat - the start of the battle between The One and The Thousand?

Is there any significance to the warren of tunnels that stretch below Cougar Ridge National Park? Could the "prophet" - and maybe the murderer(s) - be using them to effect his ghostly appearance and disappearances?
