Cutting Down the Bigger Tree

(Remember that comic strip/series of Archie-like comic books/something like that, from the 70s, that had a bunch of kids of different races and ethnicities that dealt with issues like racism? They were called the Rainbow Kids, or the Rainbow Gang, something like that. There was one strip where a bunch of the kids had a saw and an axe and were walking down the street, and one of the other kids asked what they were doing. "You said we need to cut down the bigger tree in the neighborhood, so that's what we're doing!" "I said big-o-try!")

Bigotry is bigotry is bigotry. It doesn't matter if it's a white racist or a female sexist or a pagan who thinks Christians should be fed to the lions. "I'm not prejudiced. I just don't like Republicans." That's prejudice, and the practice of it is bigotry.

The Winter Olympics are in Russia this year. Russia has reportedly horrific anti-GLBT laws. This is generating a lot of discussions all over the internet.

I was just reading one where someone claimed that homophobes' opinions are wrong, and that they don't deserve the space to express them. It was the second time I saw her make that claim in that discussion, so it was no accident.

I called her a bigot. I was seriously tempted to ask where she kept her gas chamber, because of the vehemence with which she worded her opinion, but I restrained myself.

I know I've said this before, but I still agree with the stand-up comedian I saw once who said he doesn't understand why there is prejudice in the world, when there are perfectly good reasons to hate every single person on the planet, personally.

internet, i hate people, there is life outside livejournal, elitism, piss me off, for pony!, bigotry, drama, politics, rant
