I realize it's been a while since I created an icon tutorial, and I promise to change that. :) Here is 1 new tutorial, and I'm working on another one! This one features the lovely Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
Turn this icon:
into this:
without using selective coloring. :)
Program used: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Level of difficulty: Easy
Translatable: Yes to PSP and PS, not sure about GIMP
Number of steps involved: 6
1. Open up the image or base you want to use. For this tutorial I used a pic that was already on the lighter side, so I suggest using a lighter pic if you're going to try the tutorial out. I used a Beauty and the Beast base, courtesy of
refuge33.
2. Duplicate your bottom layer (called the background layer), and set your blend mode to SCREEN and your OPACITY to 27%. Depending on how light your image is, you may want to make your opacity a little higher or lower.
3. Make 4 new layers above your duplicated layer. In this order, set the BLEND MODE and OPACITY to these:
Layer 1 going up: BLEND MODE: SOFT LIGHT; OPACITY: 100%.
Layer 2 going up: BLEND MODE: OVERLAY; OPACITY: 45%.
Layer 3 going up: BLEND MODE: OVERLAY; OPACITY: 68%.
Layer 4 going up: BLEND MODE: COLOR BURN; OPACITY: 100%.
4. Going upawards in your layer palette, fill your layers with these colors: b6a38e (for the soft light layer) ; 708286 (for the 1st overlay layer) ; 5e5c4e (for the 2nd overlay layer) ; and badffc (for the color burn layer). If you get confused, I have the .psd avaliable of the icon I used, I can upload it for you to look at. :)
5. Make a new LEVELS adjustment layer. Go to LAYER, scroll down to NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER, and click on LEVELS. A little window/menu (whatever you want to call it) will pop up, and some numbers appear. Don't be afraid, this is simple. :) On your RGB channel, you'll want to have these numbers going across: 8, 1.23, 255. On your RED channel, have these numbers: 14, 1.24, 255. On your GREEN channel, these numbers: 14, 1.10, 255. And finally on your BLUE channel, these numbers: 18, 1.19, 255.
6. Ah, last but not least: make a HUE/SATURATION adjustment layer (do the same thing you did above to get to it but this time click on hue/saturation). On your MASTER saturation, make the saturation somewhere around +25.
That's it! :) I hope this was easy for you! Play around with your numbers, and as an option, add some brightness and contrast to your icon. You can also use different textures and brushes. I didn't use any for this tutorial so you could actually see the coloring of the whole icon. :)
Other icons I made with this tutorial (remember, not every icon turns out the same as the tutorial, so that's why I post these examples):

Please no bashing!
Please don't steal the icons, ask if you want them.
Credit for the screen caps are listed in my memories (at the top of my head I can't remember who I got these Beauty and the Beast screen caps from but I know it's in my memories), so don't credit me for those, just credit me for the icons.
I'd love to see your results if you try this out! :)
