Make this icon:
by using this base (by
refuge33) :
Made in: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Translatable: Yes (doesn't use selective coloring, but does involve color balance!)
Level of difficulty: Medium (uses color balance, and has 7 steps in it)
1. Open up your base. I used a Beauty and the Beast Disney base made by
refuge33. If you're not using a base, open up the pic you want to use, crop it to the position you want it in, and resize your pic to 100x100.
2. Duplicate your base. I set this layer to screen 58%. Adjust accordingly, but in this case my icon was already a little bit on the lighter side. In this layer, you're welcome to sharpen your base if needed. I sharpened mine, but faded the sharpening by about 50%. Again, adjust according to what you're working with.
3. Make a new layer (Layer+New Layer). Set this layer to soft light 100% opacity, and use this color to fill the layer: 669edd.
4. Make a new layer. This time, set your mode to overlay, but leave the opacity at 100%. Fill it with this color: 573414.
5. This is where most of that peachy coloring comes from: Make a new levels adjustment layer (Layer+New Adjustment Layer+Levels). To get that peachy kind of coloring, these were the settings I used:
RGB: 16, 1.17, 255
RED: 52, 1.67, 255
GREEN: 0, 1.05, 255
BLUE: 15, 1.05, 255
6. Let's finish this up! Make a color balance adjustment layer (layer+new adjustment layer+ color balance) In the MIDTONES, and only the midtones, change your settings. These were my settings:
-55, -5, -22.
7. Finally: Make a hue/saturation adjustment layer (layer+new adjustment layer+hue/saturation). In the MASTER mode, adjust the saturation to +42 or so, this is what makes the icon appear bolder and brighter in colors.
Done! Other examples:
So... what do you think? This can be used on a lot of cartoon icons, which is what I did with this tutorial. Feel free to friend me if you like the tutorial, I always friend back! :) Let me see your results if you try this out? :)
