Working in a manga store

So I decided so spend part of my spring break doing a work placement in the manga library I liked to visit from time to time for my (rare) manga purchases. The location is pretty quiet, employees are nice and on top of all that, I get to work in one of my favourite field. I didn’t think it woud le so easy. I mean, I simply asked out of curiosity one day to the employee wether they accept work placements with noobs and he answered they did, so I gave them a CV and a motivation letter (in which I wrote that I was part of the Aarinfantasy community!).

The owner is apparently a nice dude who likes to help yougsters in their ambition, studies and apprenticeships giving them the chance to work in his store. I won’t be paid any single cent nor any manga but whatever, I can do things I like and it will be a valuable experience I will write on my CV once my 5 days job is over, so I have nothing to complain about really.

This morning I came 20 minutes early only to notice after waiting a long time in front of the shop that the 1: light were being turned on and 2: the shop was opened with two employees inside it. I didn’t even see them coming… Are they ninjas or what?! xD

My first task was to check the shelfs of manga (ordered by edition) to see which volumes are missing so that we can get them on the storehouse. If the products are missing in the storehouse then they woud command them for the end of the week. Since the store is small and there is not enough space for all the volumes to be displayed you have to remove some of them. The most important thing is that the first and last published volumes are available on the shelf. Of course the client can freely ask for a non-displayed manga or volume.

Well, that’s pretty my much the job I was assigned to today. I also had to flatten a row of manga if needed and help the customers finding what they want. It was pretty easy really.

I noticed that when I start working and remove my coat and stuff the full time employees would take my bag and put it behind the checkout where only the full time employees work whereas my coat has to be hanged in the already filled storehouse. I suppose I can’t put my bag wherever I want and they’re the one taking it from me because they must have had bad experiences with temporary workers in the past. I mean, it’s would be extremely easy (and tempting?) to just take whatever you want in the storehouse and hide it in your bag, especially if you’re only here for a few days and thus won’t have much attachment to the shop or your co-workers.

I’m not a thief anyway. Stealing people’s hard work and money is not my cup of tea. I think I should tell them tomorow, not to change their behavior or anything but just so they know.

During the times when there is no client and the inventory was already checked we are allowed to take a manga and read it like in a library. Since I’m a fujoshi it would be no surprise to anyone if I said I read a yaoi. It was Ze’s first volume and it was pretty nice, though I did not intent to buy it. I like the supernatural setting, the fact that there are girls in the cast and that the story seems to focus more on friendship (at first, at least) and the relationship between the character that the sex. It’s too bad my co-workers don’t like yaoi, I would have loved to share my fujoshiness with them… Or right, I found it surprising that most Viewfinder volumes were not under cellophane!
