The Geisha - Prologue

Feb 27, 2012 23:15

I'm thinking about doing a post on how batshit the Chinese government is...based on my personal experience, of course. Would anyoen be interested in seeing that?

Disclaimer: The Geisha is written by Gethsemane Butler, and has been taken off of the internet forever. I only found a copy through the awesome Das_Mervin, the Queen of Sporking. I did not ( Read more... )

Thank you!

Inuyasha was the very first anime I watched that I liked, so I'm very attached to it as well. When I heard she wrote an Inuyasha fic, I was like I MUST SPORK THAT.

I love Japan. I've learnt Japanese since junior school and lived in Japan for almost half a year, so I know a bit too much about their culture...I'm glad the knowledge was interesting to you!

yeah Inuyasha was my first Real Anime (my first is either Pokemon,Digimon or Sailor moon *is Canadian*) too,but yeah it was really interesting to read about, and Seriously I really want to (in a trainwreck manor) introduce her to doctor who fandom (or Bleach she'd Tottally go for Aizen), but yeah Naraku..Girl REALLY?! (I wonder how she'd have treated the main canon cast...*is curious*)

The first anime I watch was Naruto...which was alright, but didn't get me fangirling. Inuyasha was the very second one, and I fell in love with that immediately.

I'd hate to see her in the Bleach fandom. KeiranHalcyon already raped that fandom.

Seriously, I literally did a spittake when I saw Naraku's name. I assume she'd go after Sesshoumaru or something, but seriously? Giant eldritch abomination? Person who regularly has to remove gigantic millepedes from his body? MASS MURDERER AND GENOCIDAL MANIC? Why the hell did she go after him?

You know the most hilarious thing about all of the culture fails regarding Geishas? If you read her journal, she obviously fancies herself quite the expert and loves snottily informing everyone what it's all about and telling people how Hollywood just screws it all up.

Lord, Gethsemane is such a big ball of fail. Excellent sporking!

Thank you! I'm very honoured.

This sporking is actually VERY cut down, because I was trying to squeeze it into one post. There was a lot more information which I couldn't fit in, like how the very first Geisha were MALE, and were associated with MALES for quite a few centuries. It only became a female centric industry in...the mid 19th century and so on.

And I found all this out in little more than ten minutes on Google and another ten minutes on instant messenger with a Japanese friend.

Fail, indeed.

Well, Gethy is nothing if not prolific. -__-;

"In Inuyasha, I don’t think it would be too unusual that a few Geisha became the companions of demons."

Nope, there were a good number of demons who married human women, and given that most of them seemed to be princesses and noblewomen, I think geisha would fit in there as well. Now, how long the geisha would survive hooking up with the demon would depend on how good that demon was. One story had a demon shack up with a human girl, and he casually put his fist through her face when he got angry at something someone else said to him.

Actually, I'd bet that Gethesemane just read about the relationship between InuYasha's father and mother and copied that out, or something.

And the Sue's backstory is pretty much a Far East version of Victoria's, isn't it? -_-

Well done on the sporking, btw! :)

I wish she wrote more fics in my fandom. Everyone seemed to have sporked something by her, so I feel so left out...

In my original sporking (which was too long to be posted in one post, and yet too short for two posts), I actually talked about how most demons would PREFER Geisha to stereotypical Yamato Nadeshiko, since Geisha were trained to be free-spirited and outspoken and EQUALS of men. It would appeal to their natures more, I think, if you are really wanting to write proper romance.

Inuyasha's mother was a princess, though, wasn't she? Geisha were evolved out of saburuko, which existed in the Sengoku era, who were little more than prostitutes. But, yes, you're right, she's basically written her character to be a pwetty pwincess, and is FAILS. Because her character is a HOOKER.

Basically, yes. I really wish she wrote more of thisfic, so I can rip apart the historical and cultural fail even more.

Thank you! I'm happy that you liked it!

Yeah, Inuyasha's mom was a princess. Poor thing, she died so young. :(

I've read one of Gethy's original stuff (forgot what it was called) on DA one time, and I didn't like it. The husband was an ass, the wife served him like the little woman she was, and the daughter was just cute--that's it.

I think she's just being too cliche for any particular fandom, especially the Inuyasha fandom, which I do like.

If she steps into Yu Yu Hakusho, SHE'S DEAD! YOU HEARD ME, GETHY?! YOU'RE DEAD MEAT!!!!!! (Raging YYH fan)

O_O She wrote original fiction? Could you link me to it? I'm very curious.

If she touches One Piece, SHE IS FUCKING DEATH. I SHALL PERSONALLY KILL HER WITH AN ARMY OF MAGICAL, FLAMING CHAINSAW-WIELDING HAMSTERS. I SWEAR I WILL.

"Anata" was a form of endearment? Is this something from the old times? Because nowadays "anata" just means "you". In the RPG I played and a lot of people call each other 貴方. The innkeeper, when you ask for a room. The landlord, when you buy a house from him. Your friends. Your classmates. Random people on the street.

Speaking of geisha, according to this book I read, geisha first emerged in the 1600s... and they were MEN. Performers for the customers who come to the houses to find the women entertainers. The first woman geisha appeared in the late 1700s. Har har har. I find it very funny. Ho ho ho.

Well, nowadays, modern couples do tend to be quite sappy, and I think some really do call each other "honey" or things like that. But back then...endearments really didn't exist, which was what I was trying to get across. Wives called their husbands "anata". That was about as sappy as people GOT.

But yes, "anata" was something like an endearment depending on the tone and expression you say it with. It just also happens to be the formal-form of "you". Japanese is confusing.

Hee. I know. I was going to talk about how the first Geisha were male too, but alas, LJ has a word count. So I ended up having to delete that little bit. In fact, until fairly recently (like, last century or two), Geisha wasn't a purely-female career at all.

You never did answer my post and while that's completely understandable given the manipulative and reprehensible nature of all I said and tried to do. The fact that you haven't updated your Journal nor posted any sporkings on Das_Sporking makes me worried that perhaps it's more than just you understanding that what I did was beyond forgiveness. It makes me worry that perhaps your talk of suicide might have become more than talk though I hope that you've just been busy with University or perhaps have grown out of Sporking all together. I still have to try and find out.

My fear of hearing just how much my message revealed about my own twisted nature has finally been superseded by my fear of your own health. And I'm beyond ashamed that it took this long to abandon that selfish cowardice.

So I'm posting this on the off chance that you still look at your Journal to ask are you alright?

I hope you are but hope is such an empty thing.
