RANT 2 (that's right I said it!)

I truly believe that if Jacob was white that he wouldn’t get the kind of hatred that he does. Yes Jacob is not perfect but neither is Edward. People choose to over look Edward’s flaws, by justifying it as “love” or “protection”, but they have no problem with dragging Jacob through the mud. To "Jacob haters" Jacob is just a savage trying to steal ( Read more... )

I don't really pay attention to what Jacob haters say, so what are some examples of them illustrating that race is a factor?

Pointing out that Jake needs a nose job when we all know that he doesn’t have the most Eurocentric features. They don’t come out and say that race plays a part, but then again they don’t have to.

i've only ever seen these comments on places like ontd or non twi associated blogs, though. maybe my heads stuck in the ground, but i've never seen this comment coming from people of either team in twilight (that i know of). i see the ridiculing of his features on free-for-all celebrity blogs more than anything, so to say that team edward uses it as a weapon in hating jacob doesn't make sense to me. but perhaps i haven't seen the evidence.

Haters to the left, just bask in the things you love, like I do.

Disagree. The Jacob/Edward debate is about the binary of Jacob/Edward as romantic interests. Jacob is trashed because he's Edward's rival; his race has always been second, and if he were white, people would still hate him for the main reason of distracting Bella from Edward.

If Team Edward fans are desperate, they might bring in race, but I think what's generally recognized by critics is that Jacob is a racist stereotype of a person of color, and SMeyer needs to own up to that. Team Edward fans tend to flock to the "rape" argument, which can then be paired--through a stereotype--to race. But for the most part, people hate Jacob because he is a central character that threatens the Edward/Bella ridiculousness.

I tend to agree with this. That being said, I think a lot of the bizarre Lautner hate is probably tied to race. (And stupidity.)

But why?! Taylor is not even Native American! Why the hell would it be about race? That doesn't make any sense what so ever!

His skin isn't (sparkly) white. That's enough for lots of people.

Which is why I never leave this community, I NEVER lurk to any other Twilight fandom website because of THESE sort of discussion, my family have strong American Indian roots (biologic/genetic speaking), and it would make me really upset If I read sort of things, so I just better stay here and continue living on my Happy Jacob Bubble World, where I find no such hatred towards my fav Indian mechanic boy! :)

WHY DID WE READ IT AGAIN?
Because Jacob is Jacob. The end.

but the real issues that would go along with being NA, like poverty and violence and alcoholism and POVERTY and the fact that SOMEONE WOULD COMMENT ON A WHITE GIRL ALWAYS BEING ON TRIBAL LAND, OKAY, are completely absent from the text itself
THIS. & now I bet you've got teenage girls thinking a reservation is just a part of town where everyone happens to have a different skin tone.

*edit: crazy typo
