I Will Follow You Into The Dark, G, 495 words. anonymous October 23 2009, 08:32:20 UTC
It was like hitting a brick wall. Or jumping into icy water, which was something she wasn't unfamiliar with. But this wasn't uncomfortable. No, far from that, this was the biggest comfort she'd ever felt. That's what Jacob Black was to Bella Swan. Comfort. Warmth, wholeness, as if somehow all the good feelings she'd ever felt in her life were somehow embodied in him and his sunrise of a smile. She felt ridiculously stupid for not realizing it before. Jake sure had. She couldn't be chastised though...when you thought you'd found your destiny, you weren't too hasty about letting it go. But what happens when your so-called destiny left you, with seemingly no regard for how you would cope in his absence? That's what had happened to Bella. She'd been abandoned, and shattered to the core. But patiently, painstakingly, Jacob had been putting her back together all along. And she didn't even realize it. He'd seen her at her absolute worst and pulled the best out of her. How was that even possible? She was sure she couldn't have done the same.

Her heart raced as she walked the all-familiar path back to Billy's garage where she was sure Jake was waiting for her. What would she say? "Oh, hey Jake. By the way, I'm hopelessly in love with you, too"? Of course not. She wasn't exactly experienced at this stuff. But as she stepped through the doorway and his brown eyes met hers, none of that mattered. Words weren't even needed between them, he just knew. That's how it was between them. Jake and Bells, they just fit together. As he took her into his arms and she sighed with relief, she realized that she'd never felt so safe in her life. After a moment, she pulled away, his eyes curious. "How could you not just give up on me? You weren't even sure that I'd ever forget about him. I was so broken and you just, you never-" as she trailed off, Jake smiled that signature smile that Bella couldn't resist. "Love isn't about what you get in return, Bells. It's what you have to give. I was always yours, and in my heart you were always mine. It didn't matter that you were broken. I loved you in spite of it. Of course, it hurt like hell that you didn't feel the same. But I had this hope...inexplicable, insane, didn't-make-sense-at-all type of hope...that maybe someday...you'd feel the same. That's why I met you where you were. At your best, and at your worst. That's what love is, Bella. And I love you, more than anything." Had she not believed the words, the look in Jacob's eyes couldn't have hidden his feelings. Once again, Bella felt the surge of warmth rush through her whole being. "And I love you, Jacob Black." she declared, eyes brimming with tears. "Hmmph," Jake snorted, pulling her in for a kiss. "It's about dang time!"

I'm not even gonna lie. This line: "Love isn't about what you get in return, Bells. It's what you have to give. I was always yours, and in my heart you were always mine," gave me goosebumps!!!

That was my personal favorite line too, actually! ;) Thank you so much! This was my first hand at J/B fic, or fic of any kind, really. So it really means a lot!
