At the end of the Trio’s sixth year Professor McGonagall assumed the position of Headmistress after Professor Dumbledore’s death. During the summer she found out about Harry, Ron and Hermione’s plans to go on a hunt for the remaining Horcruxes and banned them from the search, insisting that they finish their education at Hogwarts where she could keep an eye on them.
Also during the summer Professor McGonagall had to appoint some new staff members to replace the teachers who went awol. Professor Severus Snape is still missing (probably in hiding), Professor Horace Slughorn only agreed to return for one year as a favour to Professor Dumbledore and as Professor McGonagall takes over as Headmistress she needs a new Transfiguration teacher.
M G McGonagall is no relation to the Headmistress, but he excelled at Potions and Quidditch when he attended the school, and has been hired as Slughorn’s replacement. Galatea Merrythought taught at Hogwarts for 50 years, from 1895 to 1945, and has been in retirement since, she has agreed to teach her old subject, Defence Against the Dark Arts for a year only - as a personal favour to the last wishes of Professor Dumbledore.
Professor McGonagall has not found a replacement for herself as she is so picky and so she will take the Transfiguration classes until she finds a suitable replacement. M G McGonagall will take her place as Head of Gryffindor house, Professor Sinistra will take over as Head of Slytherin house, and finally Professor Sprout will take on the job of Deputy Head.
Draco Malfoy will return to school with the others, his mother Narcissa Malfoy appealed to the Governors of the school with the plea that Severus Snape had held him under the imperius curse for the past year, and that he was only released from it as the school year ended. The Governors agreed with Mrs Malfoy and allowed Draco to return to the school.
What Professor McGonagall and the rest of the staff and students don’t know is that the two new teachers are in league with Voldemort, Professor Merrythought is a little old to be a Death Eater, but she supports what he thinks, she is unaware that he is the same Tom Riddle that she taught 50 years ago. Professor McGonagall however is an active Death Eater, and is being used as a spy within the school, since Malfoy and Snape both failed.
Professor Merrythought is evaluating all of the student’s progress in DADA and is giving McGonagall the names to approach and see if they would join the Death Eaters. If they refuse then they will lose the memory of the meeting and they will think that they simply had a cup of tea and a chat with Professor McGonagall.
