... is this their idea of a joke?

[Guess who woke up in a cat girl costume this morning.]

[It could be worse, Jacob. I could always be worse. You could be dressed as a ballerina princess. Naturally, Ion made sure to angle the journal so that most of his body is out of the camera's view.]

If this is their idea of a joke, it's not a very funny one.

[Jake's managed to hold the journal so only his head is showing - and there's a cat-ear headband on his head, so even that is pretty embarrassing.]

That's their favorite kind of joke.

I wonder how long we have to wait until the punchline...

[From what he's heard, past Halloweens have been more along the realms of terrifying than embarrassing. This might just be the beginning....]

I wish they'd just let us have a normal Halloween.

They don't have this holiday in my world, so I'm not sure what "normal" would be... though I imagine anything could be better than this.

[A chuckle.]

In my world, Halloween is the day you can dress up in a costume of your choice, or if you're old enough, dress your kids up and take them door to door so they can show off their costume and get some free candy.

That sounds like it must be a lot of fun. [Smile.] But I can't help but feel envious at the "choice" aspect of the holiday...

[If he had any choice in the matter, certainly "princess ballerina" would not be his first choice of costume.]

Yeah. I sort of hope we get some free candy out of this.

There should be candy in the shops, thou- [Suddenly remembering a conversation with a certain Taokaka who claimed to have eaten all the candy in the shops already.] ...though I suppose any kind of compensation would be better than none at all.

[ffff, that gets a laugh.]

Candy you've earned always tastes a lot better than candy you get for free.

I'm Jacob, by the way.

Nice to meet you, Jacob. I'm Ion.

Well, even if we aren't getting anything out of it, as embarrassing as these costumes are, they still aren't too bad. [It could always be worse. Which is something Ion definitely realizes, but it's still hard to say when he's wearing a frilly pink tutu.]

Nice to meet you too, Ion.

I'd take this over their other experiments any day. At least with this one we can just keep inside the house if we don't want to do anything embarrassing.

Yes, the less embarrassing this has to be, the better. I still haven't gotten the nerve to go outside without something to cover over this silly thing.

I didn't even think about doing that until about an hour ago. I can't believe it worked.

It was the first thought I had to be honest, but I think the Malnosso predicted people would try that. Whenever I try to put a coat over it... i-it turns pink. [Specifically, it turns into a giant cotton-candy-pink feather coat, but he'll just leave it at that. It's still better than being a ballerina, though.]

[O-oh wow.]

Jeez. They like their cruel and unusual tortures, don't they.
