Regular Eastern Shore winters are wet. Not with snow, but with miserable, droopy rain. It rains and rains and leaves us kids begging for sunshine.
But once about every 4 years, we have a HUGE amount of snow. All it does is snow! And 4 years ago, we had a hell of a blizzard.
So...this year, we were due.
Now all it's done is snow. :D
All week we've been hearing about this big blizzard we're supposed to get. All week people have been running around in the grocery stores like chickens with their heads cut off, buying bread and eggs and milk. It's been rush here, rush there, DON'T YOU KNOW THERE'S A STORM COMING...!?
This morning, I fell out of bed, shuffled into the kitchen, and poured myself a bowl of cereal. I looked the expiration date on the milk and smiled at the irony: It goes sour on February 14.
Heh.
I wore my favorite boots to school, though I tried not to get caught up in the snow craze. All week I've heard that we're getting anywhere from 1 to 60 inches. Even the weather channel can't make up it's damn mind.
Around 9:30, they came on the announcements and said we were having an early dismissal. I smiled and looked outside, knowing nothing was falling.
But that didn't mean something was coming.
By 12:00, the snow had started. A flake here. A flake there. Nothing to get excited about.
I got out of school at 12:40 and found Jim and Clayne sitting in the parking lot, waiting for me. I asked them where my money was, and Jim handed me a wad of cash and asked if I had plans. "What you got in mind?" I asked, and then I ignored his smartass comment, smiled at Clayne, and happily said, "Well, Clayne, you haven't changed a bit."
And he hadn't. ;)
Faith's staying with Shady (Jim's older brother) in St. Michaels for the snow, since Tilghman goes to hell in a hand basket when it snows (it's basically every man for himself), and I guess Jim's with us. I asked Clayne where he was staying, and he just shrugged. I told him if he needed to warm up, he could come to my house. Jim rolled his eyes, and then he took my phone and decided to call Dwayne, to see if he got out of BWI.
Dwayne's headed to Florida, for the superbowl. The asshole obviously had something over someone, and he wound up with ONE superbowl ticket.
I hope it rains its ass off in Florida, Dwayne. JUST FOR YOU. :)
(Dwayne hates Florida.)
Dwayne indeed got out of BWI, and I wished him luck and hung out with Jim and Clayne for a while. Then Jim dropped Clayne off at somebody's house, and he took me home. When we walked inside, he grabbed me by the arm and asked, "You busy?" I just stared at him, and he sat down, reached for the remote, and added, "Your poor sick best friend could use a warm meal..." I just marched myself into the kitchen and clenched my teeth.
It's going to be a long weekend.
BUT...
It's snowing harder now, and I'm starting to get excited. Tonight and early tomorrow is supposed to be brutal. 40 mile per hour winds and blinding snow...thank goodness nobody's going anywhere. I plan on staying put all weekend.
And if anyone else has snow, I suggest you do the same. :)
