Dad used to go all out on Halloween when we were kids.
Ghosts in the trees, scarecrows, hanging skeletons; you name it he'd have it. Our front yard always looked like a sadistic graveyard. In the daytime it brought a smile, a giggle, but at night it just brought shivers and unknown fears. Our house rocked on Halloween, and kids know damn well that the best lookin' houses carry the best candy.
As the years passed, things changed.
Dad's energy fell through the floor, and he didn't seem to have the same spirit about Halloween. He always bought a pumpkin, and maybe something to put on the door, but my childhood memories of a ghoulish night were fading.
This year I asked Dad what he was doing for Halloween. He just sighed and said, "Halloween is for happy people. Happy families. That's something we aren't."
So Chris bought the pumpkin, I carved it, and then I scoured the attic for old supplies. I hung a cute little Halloween decoration on the door, and then I picked out my favorite Halloween bowl, to put candy in.
I made sure we got the best candy.
I decorated the bushes with those old fake cobwebs, like I did when I was a kid, and then I put the purple light bulbs in on the front steps.
I lit the silly Jack O Lantern, laughing at how ridiculous it was, and then i went back in and set a card table by the door, to put the candy on. Then I put on my favorite tights (the ones with skull and crossbones on them), black shorts, and a witch hat. I painted my face and slipped into a pair of black shoes.
Then I met Jessie with the kids. Cassandra was a beautiful little skeleton, and Gunner was a frog. RJ was a ninja, and I could tell Gunner was jealous. I mean, what little boy wants to be a frog?
Cassandra fell asleep pretty early, but we got her to grab candy!
Everybody loved her. She's an angel.
I'm so glad I got to be a part of her first Halloween!
It was exhausting, and my feet hurt, but I loved it. It was so much fun.
When I came home, I played the Monster Mash, and you know what happened?
I danced.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!
