Say you had a bad day. You dropped shit at work, or you flunked a test, or maybe you did both.
Maybe it just wasn't your day.
No, it wasn't your fault. You just woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
...Maybe you woke up on the floor. It happens. We've all been there.
Sometimes you just need a drive. Just get in the car and get away. Walk away. RUN AWAY.
But if you're not the running type, like me, grab your keys and turn up the radio.
Cause driving is the lazy man's (or woman's) walk. :)
EVERYONE KNOWS THAT.
So I get in Old Blue (my reliable junker) super pissed. I slam the door, shove the key in the ignition, and I go.
I take Route 50 to Dover Bridge Road. If I kept going, over the bridge, I'd end up in Preston where my current boyfriend lives. Memories flash and never fade fast when I think about all the stupid stuff we've done.
I cut before the bridge onto Chilcutt Road. That's where I hit my first live animal, coming around a turn. You know how most people hit maybe a squirrel, or a bunny? I HIT A LLAMA. An all out llama that had escaped from a farm. I WISH I could wipe that memory away...
I make the right onto Dover Neck and follow it and all its curves past Dutchmans Lane. If I took Dutchmans, I'd end up at Sami's house. I always smile and think about her when I pass it.
I stay close to Dover Neck until it melts away into Manadier Road. Manadier is a crazy road, meant to be taken at 30mph. 30? HELL NO. Turn the music up loud, flick your high beams on, say a silent prayer that you won't hit deer and drive that road hard. :)
I make a right onto Schwanniger Road, my FAVORITE ROAD OF ALL TIME. It's a two lane road big enough for 1 and a half cars (I've met a few combines and farm trucks in my short time driving it), and it's in the middle of NOWHERE (AKA Cordova, Maryland). This secluded road is special to me. I know this road. Every bump, every pothole, every inch of asphalt slapped and steamrolled down under my tires... This road heals my heart. It makes me remember what's important: home. The Eastern Shore. My past. My present.
But not my future.
Schwanniger leads out to Route 50, and I've come full circle. Sometimes I do it again, just to feel the memories. Just to feel the freedom.
And sometimes, once is all it takes to send me home with a smile.
