Character

Name: Bepo
Fandom: One Piece
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown. At least an adult bear.
Time Period: Not long after his last appearance in chapter 595.
Wing Color: Yellow.
History: Wiki. And the crew Wiki for reference.
Personality: Bepo's usual behavior tends to fall within the lines of relatively easygoing. He can keep his head on straight in the middle of a chaotic fight (most of the time)- when the Marines were called to Shabondy Archipelago, he didn't panic, instead fighting through them with the rest of his crewmates. While mostly designated to a comic relief role, he's competent enough to know when it's time to be serious, as evidenced by his actions in the battle at Marineford (recognizing that Luffy was very seriously wounded, telling his Captain to close the submarine door). He's a casual speaker, too. Almost everyone starts out on the same level of respect with Bepo, until they earn or...strongly demand different treatment. He even very informally addressed Boa Hancock at first: one of the most powerful women in the world.

Just because he can speak doesn't necessarily mean he's a chatterbox, though. Bepo hasn't got a problem with talking to anybody or maybe tossing in a couple of questions, but most of the time he seems content to hang in the background while everybody else gets out their daily helping of exposition.

In spite of the fact that he's a bear, Bepo tends to have more human-like behaviors than anything else. Speaking, walking on two legs instead of four, wearing clothes and even his fighting style are a few that come to mind right off the bat. He even seems to be concerned with his seniority in the crew- taking a few extra seconds in the middle of a chaotic fight to inform a new member that being new meant they were below him in ranking. That being said, he also seems to have some animality left in him. He's got the common sense to know when to run, but when his Captain's called him out to fight, he doesn't bother holding back at all (a trait often accompanied by shouting "AYE" over and over again). He's still interested in female bears rather than humans, evidenced in one or two comments he's made to his crewmates. It even seems that he has no problem spreading out and snoozing in the middle of the day. Of course, this is the series that houses Roronoa Zoro, sleeper extraordinaire, so that's mostly up to reader interpretation.

Bepo's also incredibly easy to put down. Maybe even ridiculously easy. One of our first experiences with him entails Bepo going nuts fighting Marines-- and bowing his head, apologizing and clearly depressed, when they wondered "what kind of bear can talk". When he was seen before that, he compliments Boa Hancock on tracking where they would resurface their submarine: she scolds him for changing the subject and he apologizes again, addressing her very respectfully from there on out. He even became depressed and apologetic when his own crewmates yelled at him over the matter of female bears being on the island of women. This is just how Bepo reacts to scolding tones and...I suppose to wording that could imply it's wrong for bears to speak. This (which I'll admit is mostly my own perception of things) could also be one of those more instinctual animal behaviors- like hitting a dog on the nose with a newspaper and watching it shy away.

Last but certainly not least comes the matter of his Captain; Trafalgar Law. It's shown pretty steadily in canon that the Heart Pirates (his crew) have a great deal of respect and fondness for their leader. They're not afraid to ask questions about the decisions he makes, but at the end of the day they'll still follow those decisions no matter what. Bepo is no exception to this: in fact, canon often implies that he and Law are quite close to one another. Bepo's the only one seen being allowed to carry his sword, openly shows concern for him, and even lets Law use him as a personal couch while he's asleep. Law's shown trusting Bepo to eliminate an enemy attacking him from behind without even looking to make sure. This man gets treated with more respect than anybody else Bepo's interacted with to date. His orders are followed with enthusiasm and, so far on Bepo's part, without question. He's also only addressed as Captain- not Law, not Captain Law, not Trafalgar- just Captain. Because that's who he is (it's common theory that Bepo is even the crew's first mate, too, though this hasn't seen any absolute confirmation that I've been able to find).

And, well, that's pretty much all there is to know about Bepo.

Strengths:
Bepo is pretty well-off in terms of physical strength; not only does he have the natural strength of a full-grown, healthy bear, but he's also been trained in martial arts. He's canonically shown to have considerable power and agility, flipping through the air and knocking Marines to the side with a series of quick attacks. He's also gifted with intelligence- at the very least, just for being a bear that can walk on its back legs and speak. And while he's not seen putting together anything particularly complicated, he's at least got enough sense to know when it's time to get the hell out of dodge (telling his captain to stop being impressed by seeing one of the Four Emperors and close the submarine door in Marineford, more or less). Bepo's strong enough not to have been knocked out by a blast of Haki from Silvers Rayleigh, one of the most powerful men in the world, and seems to be able to keep calm in hectic situations most of the time.

Weaknesses:
A kung-fu bear he may be, but Bepo is still just a bear in a jumpsuit when it gets down to it. If someone gets close enough, he's as vulnerable to blades/bullets/blunt force trauma as any other mortal creature. Just with the bonus of potentially making a rug out of him. Mentally, he really doesn't have too much to brag about in terms of defense. It's impressive enough that he talks and fights- a psychic attack would have the intended effect on him, and he'd probably be easy to control after the initial struggle. Emotional weakness is actually probably his biggest one of all. For some reason, it's incredibly easy to put Bepo down, even just as easily as questioning what kind of bear talks. He's been shown to stop in the middle of fighting to look dejected and apologize- which could potentially get him killed or seriously injured in the wrong situation.

Samples

First Person:
[ For a solid few minutes, the only sound is that of...considerably loud snoring. It's interrupted by a soft splat, and comes to an end with a jerking snort. ] H-hey, be careful! You might be new, but you should still know not to--

Ah?

Snow. How did I get here? [ A pause. ] Everyone? Captain?

CAPTAIN~~!

[ One more expectant pause, and a thump as someone sits down heavily. ] They wouldn't leave me behind...where did they go?

[ A beat. ] Where am I?

... I have wings?!

Third Person:
Something is wrong with his back. It's the first thing that Bepo is absolutely sure of as he comes to- a dull ache that shouldn't be there, something that had made him roll over onto his side as he slept. He's not sure what to make of that or of the cold and the wet that he's somehow sunk into, because thinking feels a lot harder than it should be, for some reason.

He peels his eyes open and pushes himself to feet, blinking against the reflection of the sun on snow. A list of problems come to his notice pretty quickly.

His balance is off- not because of the lingering tiredness, but because of something else entirely, something small and barely noticeable that he can't remember ever feeling before. The second thing he remembers is that it shouldn't be snowing- he shouldn't be off of the submarine at all, actually. Captain was talking, and he was asleep- and now he was ashore, in the cold, too tired to have only been napping and his jumpsuit was missing.

The more he notices is wrong, the more aware he becomes, the more he feels like he should be panicking. He never left the crew- he never left the Captain. And sure, they yelled at him for a lot of things (even though he still couldn't figure out what was wrong with female bears), but they wouldn't leave him, either, and he's always been able to be sure about that. Which leaves him without a lot of leads and hoping that he didn't accidentally get taken by a traveling circus.

And his jumpsuit is still gone.

Bepo barely takes notice of the book standing out against the rest of the ground nearby, and promptly dismisses it once he does. For the time being, his eyes are fixated on seeking more important things- certain shades of yellow and orange, the crew's flag, a Den-Den Mushi, anything.

He doesn't find anything but silence and the trees, and it leaves him feeling more alone than he has in a very long time.
