Iain: I take thee as my Heart, my Soul, my Woman with a shining blade, with the promise of a bright dawn in each new day and a soft bed at each day's night. I promise to love thee and honor thee; to make you laugh when you are feeling out of sorts and to listen to you when you speak. I will protect thee from the elements and the dangers wherever we encounter them. I will love thee through scurvy and through fire, in wealth or poverty whether you are near or far. And when I speak of treasure, as I am wont to do, everyone within the sound of my voice will know that what I am really speaking about is you. All of this will I undertake until there are no horizons left to chase, the rum is gone, and the Jolly Roger flies no more. Then will I know my life is complete, for you were with me from beginning to end.
Shadow: I take thee as my heart, my compass to guide me through the fickle winds of fate. Through Battles fought, won or lost, through peace and strife, through the journeys on long dusty roads, I will forever be at your side, if not in form, in thought, and in heart. When I spin tales of heroes and wars, all within the range of my voice will know it is you I speak of. All this and more I undertake this day, and when the tales are no more, and the fire burns low, and all the world has forgotten, I will still be at your side, and I will know I have lived my life to the fullest, for I will have laughed and loved in triumph and defeat with you, my Heart, at my side.
She looks at the words written in his slightly sloppy, familiar handwriting. He'd actually memorized it. He'd meant every word of it.
But where was he when she had been driven into a coma? Oh, but he came after.
Where was he when so many things had happened. When she needed his arms wrapped around her? When she needed the comfort of his voice and hands?
Does he love me? she thinks idly to herself, Though I love him with the entirty of my soul. I cannot think of anything in this world that I love more then Iain.
She stares at her wedding ring, amethyst gaze distant as memories play through her mind.
Shadow shakes her head. "But he wouldn't let me do it. He doesn't trust me."
"Oh?" Iain says, raising an eyebrow. "His trust won't have anything to do with it. After all, I can marry whomever I choose."
Shadow shifts in his arms, looking up at him. "What?" she says, a bit stunned.
Iain smiles down at her. "I said I can marry whomever I choose. He doesn't have to accept your oath as Countess and co-ruler of the Iron Coast for me to make you my Contessa, whose word is as my own, and will in fact be my own."
She slides the silver dolphin chasing it's tail onto her finger, voice soft and determined. "He loves me. He trusts me. And I married a Pirate, I should have expected this. Stop being and idiot Kit." She stands, walking over to the sink and pouring out the tumbler of scotch. "Things will be fine, I'll go to him and let him know that I have to go to Denver, and that I will be gone a while, and he may need to come back into port to take care of the County while I'm gone."
She walks into the bathroom, turning the shower on hot and stepping inside.
