Just learned August Coppola passed away. Back in my days at San Francisco State where he was the Dean of the Creative Arts school, I had a meeting with him in his office one time. I recall him being a larger-than-life presence. Big and commanding. He somehow made his rather slobbish clothes and wild hair look refined and authoritarian. He had a gigantic brass cappuccino machine that looked right out of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Facotry, complete with steam releases that made whistles. I was nervous as heck trying to get his permission to get into a director's program that I wasn't technically eligible for (I got his blessing). He seemed to be impressed with me despite my awkwardness and I will always be flattered for that.
